why are some olympic events exclusive to amateurs

because proffesional boxing and Olympic boxing are a lot diffrent.

just because you win a gold in boxing does not mean you are going to be a good pro. just as some pro's would not make good olympic boxers.

Traditionally, the olympic games were supposed to be about sportsmanship and sport. The, somewhat anachronistic, rules were for a long time that being paid to compete i.e. 'professional' players, detracted from the idea of competition between 'gentlemen'.

These rules were changed in the 1970s to allow professional players to compete in the olympics, as long they governing body of the appropriate sport allowed it. The boxing governing body still specifies different rules between amateur and professional boxing, and only permits the amateur sport at the olympics (although 'professional' boxers are not specifically excluded), but as the rules are significantly different many may choose not to compete.

Soccer. Not quite amateur. But restricted to under-23 for men. Didn't know (or care) that the female teams are completely unrestricted.

We don't send all the All-Stars in the MLB to play on the USA Baseball team either.

Though our AAA players routinely beat the crap out of others heh.

Plus three overage players if they choose.

Not anymore. Or at least it was supposed to stop at this years Olympics, wasn't it?

EDIT: Looks like they still have them for this Olympics. Trying to find mention of the overage players going away and looks like the Wikipedia article may be incorrect.

Apparently Brian McBride and Ronaldinho seem to think they're U-23 then. 🙂

I'm not sure if the women can bring up to three overage players but I know the men can for sure.

Yep it's still on for this year. That's what I get for listening to Wikipedia.

I just read that the women have no restrictions in terms of age limits.

Edit: http://www.rte.ie/sport/2008/0804/fifa_olympics.html

That's an article detailing how they're going to review the overage rule for the 2012 games.
