Hello,

I just got this sweet SGI monitor off ebay...... (I think ebay is great, despite others opinion, but anyway.....)

its a 20" Flat Screen, I got it for $175 pl/shipping.

Its awesome except, when compared side by side to another monitor, it is a few shades darker at it's highest bright/contrast settings.

i am not worried, and I have seen plenty of other screens that are the same way.

will some monitors get darker over time?

can I do anything?

thank you...

when I push the settings button on the monitor,
the menu that pops up looks a lot brighter.

perhaps I need a specific driver for this Monitor? right now its just "Plug and Play Monitor"

by the way, the model of the monitor is: GDM-4011P

made by sony for sgi.

Before you go off the deep end getting this thing brighter be aware that the lower you can set the contrast and brightness and still get satisfactory performance the better will be the focus and the longer it will last. The gradual dimming over time of a CRT stems from the decreasing of electron emissions from the cathode of the electron guns. The thing just gets tired. A better strategy even if you find a way to crank up the brightness is to reduce background light instead or in conjunction. Cranking up voltage to increase brightness also causes the electron beams to spread out and the focus suffers as a result. Some high quality monitors have the brightness limited just for these reasons.

That sounds good.

when I turn down the C/B it definately is a little sharper.

It wouldn't be as big of a deal if I wasn't going to be using Dual head w/ the Matrox, but I'll just turn down my other monitor.

plus its still the middle of a bright day......

I am assuming, though, that a brand new $500 20 or 21 inch monitor would be pretty darn bright.

I'm still excited I got a 20" that'll do 94Hz.

and its an SGI! ....a friggin Silicon Graphics!!! woo hoo!!!

....sorry

yep, i adjusted my own monitor for better brights. There should be a couple of variable resistors inside your monitor, ones for the brightness. Careful though, high voltage.

intriguing.
