Why are some DVDs labelled "Special Edition," etc.?

Why do the studios label certain DVDs "Special Edition" or "Collector's Edition," etc.? In order for something to be considered a "special edition," would there not need to be a "standard edition" also? Do the studios consider VHS copies to be the standard edition?

I always assumed VHS was considered standard edition. Think about it: VHS is lower quality, doesn't have any commentaries, and really no extras(most of the time). DVD is much better quality, has commentaries, and almost always has extras.

Can anyone pinpoint the year that asshole software companies decided to surreptitously start using "special edition" and "limited edition" to mean "limited functionality" and not "limited production?"

I can almost remember the first time I was apalled to see this.....but not quite....

I can't stand how stores are advertising DVD's at prices like 7.99 or 9.99, and when you get there, they are the crappy cardboard box movies, with no extras or even menus for that matter. Poor people DVDs..ugh.

I don't like the fact that they leave stuff out at the theaters so that they can add it to the DVD so you'll buy/rent it too. Bunch of crap...
