What happened? Do parents not teach that these days?

i can cook pretty well.

🙂

When your on your own, it's do or die

I know families that have lived in a house for 10+ years and still have not turned the oven on once... These kids will never cook themselves since all they know is fast food.

Nope. Parents these days give the kids money to eat out. My gf eats out ATLEAST 2 meals a day. Other than that, she eats poptarts, chips, etc. Oh, btw, when we go out, she eats salads 🙂

Later

thats great. she pays what? 10 bucks for a chicken ceaser salad? buy things right and you'll be able to make that salad every day for the next week

1. buy bag of frozen chicken breasts at sams club
2. head of green, i prefer iceberg and romane (sp?) mix
3. bottle of dressing
4. pepper, parmesigan (sp)

so easy.. might cost a bit more that way.. but then again, there would be enough to eat for more than one meal.

they are bad cooks because they are lazy. too many parents give their kids too much money, instead of actually haven't to work to make food, it would be easier to go and spend money on crap food from tbell.

:disgust:

people still cook but i think our society has become a "time trap"

i manage my time in such a way so that i have time to cook from scratch.

it is much cheaper than eating out.

i can cook italian, japanese, korean, and ameican if there is such a thing. i used to cook for my roommates.

i can cook. really well actually. ive always enjoyed it

my younger brother on teh other hand. cant make condences soup

Pretty much everyone in my family can do basic cooking. When I go to cook something, usually the only questions are "how hot, and how long?".

i second the 'no time' reason. i love cooking but when i was working last year i pretty much ate dinner most nights of the week at work ordering thru our company dinner menus.

Between work, games, and 'teh intarweb', who has time to cook anymore? 😉

Seriously, though, I can do some cooking, and do it fairly well. But my talent is limited, and I don't have the urge to pour lots of time into learning new styles, so if I want something I'm inexperienced with, odds are I'll bite the bullet and go to a restaurant for it, where I know it'll either be a) cooked properly and what I wanted or b) sent back. It's a lot less satisying to send something back when you're the cook. 😀

My brother is a Chef with his own catering business (good enough that a large pharmacuetical company has hired him 3 years running for the US Open and The Masters golf tournaments) for the weekend and runs the sandwhich shop at the Y in Raleigh. I learned a few things before I left home for the military and my sis even learned.

I prefer Mom's cooking to anything else really and to solve that problem I got her recipes for my favorite foods and I can make them from scratch. During the week, I only have about 3 hours from the time I get home from work to whip something up (usually Hamburger Helper or even Tuna Helper, with chicken typically,) eat, clean up the dishes and shower along with other things I need to get done. I don't have the time to cook a big pot of chili til the weekend (takes at least 2 hours.)

I can buy enough food for what it would cost to eat out for a week that would last me 2 weeks.

1. Not many get taught by their parents. I did, I just asked one day, and ended up cooking for the whole week 🙂

2. Cooking is something that cannot be rushed. In this day and age where time = money, people who cook also forget to pay extra attention to detail, and extra time on certain aspects of cooking.

This leads to a nice .... takeaway 😀

Speak for yourself! I can cook pretty well(just like all my three other brothers). I cook mostly Chinese but am able to make burritos, tacos, grilled steaks,etc.etc. In fact, I am making corned beef with potatoes, carrots and cabbage. I suspect that I am going to be passing a lot of g*s later.

We save a lot of $$ by making our own dinner and with the leftovers, my kids usually eat it for breakfast. The fixings didn't cost me more than $5.00 and it feeds a family of four with extra food for leftovers.

For many people they are just cooking for themselves or one other. It's cheaper, easier, and quicker just to throw a tv dinner in the nuke.

I'm not a great cook... I only do the basic stuff. But I can do more than most my friends.

One of my roomates would die if he was forced to cook anything 😛 He just eats cereal all the time.

I can cook:

Spaghetti (yes, I make the sauce from scratch. No premade sauces for me! And my friends say that my sauce is better than what they get in a restaurant. This is my best meal, because I cook it all the time as it is my favorite food).
Omletts (sp?)
French Toast
Grilled Cheese (I only mention this because on of my roomates didn't know how to make this :Q... I was amazed).
Steak
Chicken

various other easy things (scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, rice, etc.)

You must broaden your cooking skills, grasshopper. The chicks will dig it. 😉

I can cook. My parents run a fish and chip and chinese takeaway. They cook 110 odd things off the chinese menu and they cook Cambodian food.

Both my parents are excellent cooks. My mums Cambodian cooking is amazing. Rivals any Thai/Chinese restaurant I've eaten in China town and its free. Her Red curry is exactly the same as the Thai restaurant I've been to. I was like wtf? This is exactly how my mum cooks it.

Definately have to learn more cooking off my mum. Got to get the gf in on that too!

People don't cook as they never try or they can't be bothered. I did FST (Food Science Technology) and some people couldn't boil and egg. Shocking.

Man I remember the *art of making a sandwich*. I was like wtf? Spread from the inside out to cover all of the bread, blah this blah that. The FST teacher was also overweight and not fit. You could tell she was THE FST teacher. There was nothing else she could do at the school either; maybe Female Sumo champ? Probably win due to mass alone..........

oh yeah the better question is:

Why can't people cook rice properly?

I've eaten something with rice at some friends house and their mums can't cook rice. Granted I use a Rice cooker but I cook rice well with a normal saucepan. They put in far too much water and the rice once done is slippery and wet. I like my rice to be a bit sticky and not so separated. Like how you get it from an orientals place.

i dont see why its so hard to follow cooking instructions. i wouldn't call myself a chef (since i dont really know any special dishes, and i really cant come up with stuff on my own), but i've never had a problem following directions and having it turn out just fine.

i think people have become so used to pre-made ready to eat foods, they think that it's impossible to make something from scratch, so they simply don't put any effort in, which basically ensures that whatever it is they're making is gonna turn out like crap.

Yes, I have been meaning to. Basically the only mean that is intensive that I can cook is Spaghetti. Since I don't have a GF, I always end up cooking it for my roomates girlfriends when they come over. They do love it.

I think it might be a case of broadening what I eat.... whenever I feel like cooking a meal, I usually just end up cooking Spaghetti. This happens about every 3 days or so, and I have leftovers the other days. Yes, I eat a ton of spaghetti 😛
