They cost an arm and a leg for something that cost next to nothing. 25c snacks =.75 to 1.00, 25c soda=1.00-1.25
Someone must be getting rich off these cheap stuff:Q
Remind to me to buy as much as junk food/drink as possible when going on a long trip:p
yes, i bought some on the road before but I regret that I did because it isn't wise:(

Maybe because they have to drive 50 miles just to refill the machine?

Yes you should have gone to Walmart before you left it you wanted it cheap. Your paying for convenience.

Because that's how they make their money, WduaqnugXP. They have no competition and the people who consider purchasing food there are probably pretty desperate.

It's just one of the rules of economics: what the market will bear.

because they know there are people like you out there that dont pack food for the road and then will hit up machines along rest stops. :)

As has been mentioned already (but I'll clarify):

1.Convenience - you are hungry while driving across the country and they are supplying you with food.

2.Cost to them - there is probably a lot of overhead for them to have a delivery truck drive down the Interstate Freeways and drop off a couple ring dings every 50 miles. They need to mark up the items to make their fuel costs back.

Supply and demand is a better argument, imo, they charge that much b/c they can. Where else are you going to go?

Keep in mind that most rest areas are maintained by the states too. I don't know if they make any profit off the vending machines, but I would hope they get a little of the profit since most states are cuttng budgets left and right lately. Most have to pay for an attendant or security officer to staff the rest area which costs yet more money. :p

are you talking about those peanut butter chips? aka snack bar.
Their cheaper because their not trying to make as much profit as everywhere else. hell, even selling it cheap is good for their karma and still plenty of profit because more people will buy if its cheap. They have to realize that everyone is hungry and not everyone is rich or have money to burn like they thought. IMO, they charge much more so they can make a lot more and not have to work as much. In short, their really lazy about supplying demand. :\ I find most of the snacks empty most of the time and they hardly ever replaces them.

No vending machine here carries Peachie-O's. Walmart has stopped selling them too. And all the stores sell off-brands. They are my snack of choice for road trips.

Make your own snacks. Buy some beef from the grocery store and have them slice it extra-deathy-thin, then marinade it and dry it. I've made lots of beef jerky that way, and it cost a lot less than the same amount would have at a store. Tasted better too!

Or you could, y'know, eat real food instead of crap. Stop at restaurants, or at least McD's.

McD's doesn't serve real food.

And we live in America, with your methods, we would not fulfill our daily value of snacks.
