Why are Ripjaws so popular?

Don't mind me asking, but I want to know why this specific brand of DDR3 memory is so popular. I see it in every build, and it's among the best selling RAM on numerous websites.

So, is it because they're really good?

Cheap Dominator alternatives. 😉

Quality, Specifications, Price, Company reputation = Bang for the buck balance

cheap - they are cheap that is all. there is no better QC than other chips. mass produced cheaply. this was from a person that makes ram in the usa (TAA compliance) - there is nothing great about it. high margin is the only thing good.

Dominators are better.

Only cause corsair does some after the fact binning on their ICs that gskill doesn't. Both are using the same powerchip ICs though I believe, and the ripjaws are usually $10-20 cheaper than dominators. Since I always underclock my ram for max stability and aim for lower latency, I don't care as much if the kit is binned for a higher OC

At the time I bought mine it was the cheapest Cas 7 1600mhz 4gb set I could find. Well barring some no warranty ebay deal that's highly suspect.

if you really did not care about speed but reliability you'd know that ECC and a xeon is the way to go.

6-12gb of ram is highly subject to error - like 2-3tb sata drives.

I'd take a 6gb ECC Xeon nehalem over 12gb i7 any day - because one would not crash randomly unexplicably or corrupt itself without knowing (xeon's carry ecc internally - to the bus, to the ram etc).

as GI joe said, knowing is half the battle.

ECC is a better way to go for memory reliability.
But the problem is not so much the cost of a Xeon, but the extra cost of a feature rich Xeon MB.
I'd love to move to ECC but the expense doesn't make it economically feasible for my machine usage.
In some ways the good old days were better.

Why did I buy Ripjaws?

Because G.Skill is the only brand I'll buy right now other than Kingston (possibly). I've had horrible experiences with pretty much every other brand.

+1
this about sums it up... price is where it is at.

I ask this to myself too. There are the ECO's which nominally overclock better or run at lower voltages for the same price or cheaper ($94.99) than the Ripjaws (I've seen over $100 prices for a Ripjaws 7-8-7 set for comparison), and I recommend them to everyone who's looking at a set of Ripjaws... yet so many people would still go for Ripjaws over ECO. I do wonder why... :whiste:

Not that Ripjaws are bad RAM, they're actually quite good.

what ecos?

Cheap price, good product nothing special though, A name doesnt make or break the product.

Their normal RAM maybe require a tad bit less voltage other then that RAM is RAM , once you have the speed you do thats what it is,,,,,, all this is made in China ...

I have purchased many sets of Ripjaws in the last two years and had no problems. By many I mean over 20 sets of 2gb DDR3 DIMMS

My first from this brand because it came in a bundle discount with other components when purchased from the N-Egg.
I need to bring the ram to 1600 speed when get a chance.
I've been staying at the mobo default speed (1333) due to a new build and in a HTPC environment or heat primarily.
