Why are pumpkins associated with Holloween?

Why?

Time for a little history lesson. Back in during pagan times Halloween was said to be the day in which the vail between the living world and the underworld was at its weakest(meaing spirts of the dead could interact with the living more easily) People who needed to travel during this night would make a jackelatern out of a gourd in order to fend off the faries that may lead the traveler astray.

Fast forward to early American, settlers found that the pumpkins were eaiser to carve than the hard gourds once used and then replaced the gourd.

There you go boys and girls. Now you know why.

BTW the answer to the ultimate question is: 42

I suppose it couldn't have anything to with the fact that pumpkins ripen in mid-October, could it?

I think it has to do with an old pagan tale. Of which an old drunkard tricked the devil into a tree, and trapped him there by carving a cross into the trunk of the tree. Well, the man led a drunk and sinful life and when he died, he tried to get into heaven; he couldn?t because of the life he led, so they cast him down to hell. However when he got to hell, the devil didn?t want him either because of the trick he played on him before in his life. So, the devil gave him a turnip, and a glowing coal, and forced him to wander in purgatory for all of eternity with his turnip and glowing coal to light his way.

The reasons why we use pumpkins and not turnips here in America is because pumpkins were more readily available than turnips in the new world.

The acient druid and celts did not have a concept of the devil. The devil was invented by Christians
