Why are plextor drives so damn expensive?

Because they can? I think Lite-On would charge that much if they could...so would anyone else.
If their sales were down then they would adjust the prices accordingly dont you think?

Everyone is almost half the price as plextor for same drive. What makes thier drives worth so much? Longer warranty? Silent? What is it?

Good drives but grossly overpriced for what you get. My wife is still using my Plextor 12x cd burner back from 2000 but I would never buy another Plextor drive unless they matched competitor's price. Price/Performance ratio is absolutely horrible.

Right now there is a $30. rebate on the PX-712A drives and some others - check the Plextor.com site to DL the forms. Black is $2. cheaper than beige this weekend at newegg. Makes them almost reasonable at $72. and $74. for the retail pack AR... Excellent drives. I've got a PX-4220 SCSI burner going strong for 4-5 years. Makes better CD Audio disks than just about any of the newer drives.

Think I should get one? Hows noise? Reason is both my liton and cyndyne (sp) sound like jet aircraft taking off while spinning up.

i remember reading that the newer drives come with software that lets you set the drive to a 'low noise' mode, check out some reviews im pretty sure they mention something along these lines.

Back in the day (the pre-24x era), they were top-quality, built like a tank, and had substantial firmware engineering put into them, along with a suite of powerful custom software. But sadly, those days are long gone. In other words, they are cheap drives, made in China nowadays - you're paying for the name only.

Same here...probably 300-500 DVDs and 0 coasters...they are the best hands down...

I just want to chime in and say Plexor ROCKS!. Yes, it is more than the others, but it performs well. Only negative I can think of is that they didn't include a audio cable with it:disgust:

All i can tell you is that I had a plextor 12x CD-RW drive for years and it never gave me the faintest problem. They are very high quality drives, you can feel it, they weigh a ton.

I really like my SCSI Plextor CD burner, it's still going strong after a long time. I had a Yamaha and something else burning CDs in my other computers, one of which broke and the other is very picky about what it's willing to read nowadays. If Plextor had made a SCSI DVD burner I probably would have bought it, but they don't AFAIK. ;/

They position themselves as the top end burner. Top quality, top price.

They still appear to be considered the best quality overall, but the gap between them and the half-the-price competetors seems to have narrowed massively, so even where quality is a priority i dont think the priceerformance is good. In fact it seems to be their competetors who are coming out with the new techs / higher speed drives before they do, they dont even seem to be the tech leaders.

I won't buy Plextor again. First RW I bought was from them. 32x RW speed, I believe. As time went on, the drive had more and more problems reading cd's. And these were cd's from software packages I had purchased, games, etc.

Bought my parents an 8x RW Plextor drive a few years ago. It crapped out recently. Probably made a total of 25 disks with it in it's lifetime.

Plextor = Pricey.

I bought a Lite-on replacement drive for myself, and it smokes.

Had my father order a Lite-on CD/DVD combo drive to replace his Plextor....

Plextor might be top quality for the most part, but so are a lot of other drives at prices far less. For the educated, Plextor is a horrible deal.

I think they are just overpriced.
I've seen inside the G4's at work.. nothing "reeks of quality" inside that case, it looks like a Dell inside.

Plextor charges more because they can.
the only reason I bought mine was because it was the fiirst 8x I could find at the time.
else it might have been something different.
It works great.
