I'm only 23, so I'm deep into the "weak generation" if you want to call it that. It seems to me (and I think lost of others on here will agree with this as it's been talked about before) that people, perhaps mainly men, born in the 60s or maybe 70s on up lack a lot of the toughness that the generation prior to them had. This trend is either staying the same or getting worse.

Examples:

"mental health" sick days
metrosexuality
increased lawsuits
outlawing dodgeball, hide-and-seek, tag
etc...

It seems like people are whinier, give more excuses, don't hold to commitments, and are generally wussier than they used to be.

Why is this?

Discuss...

We no longer have survival of the fittest. Now everybody survives and the weak breed more weak.

Ah, Tag, so much fun back in the day. :)

Dodge ball was fun, but invariably, the ball would hit me in the fact and bend the crap out of my glasses. Tag was much more fun.

Lack of necessity. Quite frankly, I weep for the future and today's youth for the same reasons I pity the children of the rich. They're weak because they've never had to be strong.

We're all insanely rich. We live better than god did three hundred years ago. Convenience always makes people soft.

We are spoiled and pampered. Food is abundant and most of us have the bare necessities. We no longer have to worry about food for the winter season, etc.

We then divert our attention to stupid crap like neffing, bitching, and whining.

thats basicially it for the physicial weakness we have compaired to other generations, Humans in general have been getting weaker for thousands of years, we no longer are a hunter/gather society, brute physicial strength really isnt needed or desired for the most part, we have developed tools to do all the hard stuff for us and generally as a culture we sit on our asses all day in an office

the mental/emotional weakness i have no idea about, its just stupidity, O TEH NOES DODGEBALL

I weep over spilled beer.

Thats understandable, especially if its good beer. Then I feel all better when i go to the fridge and open another bottle. Problem solved.

Technology has made any real work unnecessary and obsolete.

Why scrub clothes by hand, wash most dishes by hand or walk anywhere when washing machines, dishwashers and cars will do these things for you? Why calculate anything by hand when a computer can do it a hell of a lot faster and more accurately?

I generally blame TV, Internet, Games, and Fast Food.

I participate in all of these... And yeah, I'm weak and lazy.

Food makes a great study on this topic BTW. I enjoy cooking (and my wife has culinary training), and most people don't realize that virtually all of cooking comes from the need to either preserve food for the lean seasons and/or to make rotten food edible. Which is why most food preservation techniques come from temperate climate cultures and most spicy foods come from hotter climate cultures. Not to mention the fact that rotted food in some form or fashion is a part of virtually all cooking.
It is necessity that shapes us and makes us what we are. And we are losing that necessity and embracing its loss in the name of "safety."
