Why are people still buying the 3gs for $300+ on craigslist?

I see a bunch of 3gs pjhones that are not unlocked or jailbroken on craigslist for over $300.

how come? is there something that i don't know?

I don't know, but I do know I sold my 3G 16GB for $210 after it was listed on Craigslist for like 8 hours lol.

Paid for the iPhone 4 upgrade so I was a happy camper.

it's like there is a secret reason people are buying them and i want to know!
they can just get a new iphone 4 for $300...but they are buying used hardware!

FWIW, all of the 4-5 people who contacted me about my 3G mentioned that they were buying it for friends/family who were going overseas. I guess it is the cheapest way to get an unlocked and contract-free iPhone.

Because it's a killer phone? I sold my 1G iPhone a few months ago for $200, I could have gotten more but @ $200 I had it sold within 6 hours of listing it. 1G's still can easily fetch $250 if you don't mind waiting a week or so to sell it.

How much did you pay for the iPhone 4 upgrade? Thinking of selling my 3GS 32mb.

First, just beacuse you them listed for $300+ doesn't mean they are selling for that much.
Its not like Ebay where you can see the final selling price.
Having said that, iphones are hot selling items if you priced them right.
As someone mentioned already, the oversea market for used iphones are huge.
Places like southeast Asia, Apple do not officially sell them there but since iphones are GSM phones, people go crazy for the iphones.
In Vietnam, having an iphone is like a status symbol.
I can buy used iphones from craigslist make at least $50 on each phone if I wanted to when I travel there.

Speaking of craigslist, I put up my used unlocked iphone 3G 8gb for $250 a couple of weeks before the iphone4 was announced.(I bought it for $250 8 months prior for my trip to Vietnam).
I sold it within 1 hr for $240. Had I waited, I would have gotten the full $250.
Unlocked iphones are so easy to sell.

My roommate just sold his 32GB 3GS for $300. He was also offer $350 for it, but that fell through. The buyer is replacing a dead 3GS. Easier to pay $300 than $500-600 for the unsubsidized price. They buy the 3GS instead of the 4 because they may not be eligible for an upgrade, and paying the out of contract price is a little steep.

You're way out of the loop.
Noone is buying 2g phones for anything close to $250 now that the iphone 4 is out.
Just a quick look on craigslist in Orlando, I see many 3G going for under $200.

The prices, especially on the 3G's, seemed to drop pretty rapidly as the iPhone 4 release date drew near and the market was flooded with people getting ready to upgrade. I probably could have gotten ~$270 if I sold my 3G several weeks before the iPhone 4 came out, but I didn't have an extra phone to use so I had to wait until I actually got my iPhone 4.

Just because you see them on Craigslist for over $300 doesn't mean anyone is actually paying that much for them.

I see 5-year-old consumer film cameras for $200 on Craigslist quite often; real-world value is closer to $20. Any idiot can post any price they want for their old junk.

I would be surprised if anyone with an IQ over 70 is paying more than $200 for a 3G, $300 for a 3GS, and $150 for a 2G (if anyone is even in the market for those anymore).

I actually posted an aggressive ode 🙂P) to reasoning to all those trying to sell their old iPhones TO FUND THEIR ENTIRE iPhone 4 upgrade. It makes me less hopeful that this culture will survive another 100 years. What a bunch of uneducated tyrants.

The reason they have the resale demand is that people will spend money on things to get into the buzz. It doesn't have anything to do with what is actually better, or what they actually like. I spent more on my Nokia back when the iPhone 3G would have cost me $99 just because the iPhone sucks. The Nokia is good, but it's processor is slow. The camera is better than the iPhone and it did video when the iPhone couldn't. It has a GREAT microphone and speaker, whereas anytime I talk to people on iPhones they are muffled and hard to understand. It even has some features the Blackberry Bold I bought for my girlfriend is jealous of. What does anyone need all those stupid apps on the iStore for? I've got apps right here..... and bluetooth tethered MEdianet access for my computer when I'm out in the jungle saving people from AIDS.

damm, you're one angry person.
I hate the iphone clones too but I'm not angry at the world.

I realize I am excellent and have a talent for articulating my opinion, giving the illusion that I am somehow more "hateful" or whatever you are thinking, but what you said is not even on topic, JA. I do not hate, and you cannot fathom my personality. Remember that for next time. Also, I decided not to post anything awesomely rude... but I'll post the verbiage in the future if I decide I want to be banned.

Meanwhile, maybe you could contribute a point on the appropriate topic rather than a simple and lame contrast of your emotions vs. mine.

I'd buy a 3gs for $220ish or so.. It is at this point, better than an iphone 4 (no signal issues), fast, able to run ios4 without major slowdowns, and is in general a solid phone.

Forgot to take your meds this morning?

Anyways, to answer op's question. The reason why the phone goes for $300 on craiglslist is because when you buy it there you buy it unsubsidized (with no contract). Try to buy a Blackberry or any other smartphone on craigslist or ebay and it'll cost you the same.

I could sell a 1G today for $200, I sold a 1st gen 16 gig iPod Touch for $150, 3 days after I listed it. Apple products don't seem to have a problem selling for a lot more than they're actually worth. I'm on CL about 10 times every day looking for shit. 3GS's are going for $350'ish in my area like hot cakes unless people are just pulling listings before they sell em. I could get $200 today for a 1G today if I had one, and could have it sold by dinner time even.

That's the power of Apple products 🙂

Maybe you could, but you'd be taking advantage of someone. Nothing necessarily wrong with that, their fault for not doing their homework.

1G's here are between 125 and 175. I have a feeling that those 175s are getting bargained down.

edit: Should qualify that with "there doesn't seem to be much of a market in general for used cell phones in this area."

I'm glad my friend get's a new iPhone every time they come out. I have bought a 2g, 3g, and 3gs from him for 40-50 bucks a pop.
