Why are people so unprofessional?

Maybe it's me but I learned from my first internship freshman year in college that you always email for traceability, and you CC as many people as necessary, and that one extra email never hurts because people brush past those anyways.

I thought that people would learn this. My gf who's still in college is in the same coed frat that I was in, and as a member of the executive board I don't get how 8 people cannot figure out how to reserve rooms on campus. Right now they're all b!tching at each other about who was supposed to reserve rooms. Basically these kids (gosh they're only 2 years younger than me) IMed each other, and probably decided in groups of 2 who would do what and of course there's confusion because obviously there was no group consulting. Having done this a year ago, I don't see how hard it is to just email 8 people with a plan or at least to discuss.

I've worked with similar individuals before back in college and well it's beyond retarded how some people can act. Reply ALL damnit.

What's worse is I've seen idiots in the workplace who can't use email efficiently for communication.

You get all of the people in the same room physically and have someone take notes, then email the notes to everyone.

When you were in the frat, why weren't you documenting procedures for posterity? A handy reference is always good for training new members.

Then you realize you're talking about kids in a frat and start chalking footprints on the ground.

Know what I hate? When people automatically Reply All to huge fucking lists like "all corporate" or "all research" or something similar with garbage meant for one person. Like replying all to a charity sign up with: "Count me in! :)". Great, you're charitable, fuck you.

I've just about given up on email at work. People either won't or can't read simple English and answer coherently.

My question to another department head: The due date for Project X is Sept 3. Are we still on track to meet the date?

Reply: Yes, 19 assemblies are ready.

Now I have to ask another question: Is 19 the total number for the project?

Reply: There are 34 assemblies required for Project X.

Now I have to ask yet ANOTHER question: Will all 34 assemblies be ready by the due date of Sept 3?

Reply: We expect to have all the assemblies finished by Sept 8.

Me: I will be right over to see you at your desk.

And the guy is quite irritated with me for barging into his office and complaining that his first email should have said what his last one did. And saying it was very misleading for him to say "yes" when the answer was really "no." And that I dared to ask him what he was doing about being late.

You don't need the 8 to reserve the room, you need 1. Trying to rule by commitee for these sort of things is rediculous. I see this sort of management in the corporate world all the time, and it takes 100% longer for everything than it should have. Your fraternity should have some sort of hierarchy, and the duties spread out over your positions. Good luck, I always hated that kind of crap.

Of course it doesn't take eight people to reserve the room, but if the one person who you believe is responsible doesn't know they are responsible for reserving the room, then you have less than one person reserving the room.

That is why in a group you clearly set out the responsibilities and ensure there are no misunderstandings. Better to learn this in college that be out in the working world and suddenly miss a deadline because you didn't clearly communicate the responsibilities to all parties involved.
