Why are people so racially intolerant?

So I'm in line at Borders waiting to pay for my books when an older lady (70's or 80's) steps in line in front of me. I don't think she did it intentionally it appeared that she simply did'nt see where the line ended. It was'nt a big deal to me, so I just continued standing where I was. A couple of seconds later her daughter took her by the arm and said the line was behind me. At this point I said it's ok I'm not in a rush, you guys can go ahead of me. The daughter then proceeds to roll her eyes and mutter a racial slur under her breath while dragging her mother to the back of the line. I've dealt with racism before but this time it really caught me off guard, by the time I left the store I was fuming. I'm a clean cut guy, I'm not into extreme fashions or clothing so it was really no reason for this idiot lady to react that way.

It just bothers me that so many people in America are racially intolerant. This is not specific to any one race, so I'm not singling any group out. It just boggles my mind that in 2008 people are still racist.
 
The problem is the people who shouldn't breed don't have anything better to do, and the people who should breed are out curing cancer and making usb powered codpieces
 
agreed, especially in america. if someone living in the rain forest doesn't react well to a person of different skin color, i can understand it as there is fear of the unknown involved. but for someone living in america in this day and age, that's just intolerable. (ooops didn't mean to use that word)
 
Yeah, this seems a bit far-fetched. You realize that most racist people aren't racist in face-to-face circumstances, right?

Trust me I have much better things to do than harrass old women in book stores. I prefer to harrass old women in antique shops.
 
I can see why you were caught off guard. Seems the daughter was doing you a favor, then you responded in kind. I would have thought it was time for a group hug.

I would have to say that she's not only a racist, but also has a screw loose.

Don't fume. There are worse people in the world and if you let every racist/crazy get to you, then who is the one in charge?

blame tv/movies/music/media and background/upbringing.
i did not even notice the difference in races until i was 10 years old, but i live in a pretty diverse part of the country.

what race are you btw?
