Well, I wasn't aware such a large HDTV was under $1000. Is this the norm, or was this some sort of hot deal?

Edit:

Just checking Circuit City's site real quick, all of the 30" HDTV's were $850+...you got a 42" for $800?
Sure, you can get big 'ol RPTV's that are HD for less than 1000 all day long.

i agree with you its absoutly pointless to buy one now...
Seriously... You can't see ANY reason that it would be enjoyable to watch DVD's or play games on a RPTV?
not any that would justify a 1000$ new TV
Ok, so "absolutely pointless" isn't quite accurate. I believe you are just saying that you could find plenty of better things to do with $1000.

Personally, I spent $1300 on my 51" RPTV and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I don't regret it for a single minute.

Fortunately, TV's aren't priced by the square inch. A RPTV is significantly less than a CRT if you go by that measurement.

no i still think its absoutly pointless, the fact that it costs that much just adds to the pointlessness

TV sucks in general... people spend to much time watching it.

Well, I'll agree are large portion is junk, but stations like the Science channel and the History channel don't suck, and you actually come away knowing more than you did before you watched most of the time.

:)

yea but still, pbs or bbc stuff tends to be superior. history channel or [discovery seems to dumb stuff down a little much, or spread material too thin, or repeats footage too much.. like its budget is too low.

One note here..I said the Science channel...not Discovery. Discovery has become crap in the past few years and primarily airs show like Monster House/Garage, Trading Spaces, etc, with very few new science oriented shows any more. The SC has sort of taken over what Discovery used to be. I will agree that they do tend to run shows several times though, but they had two new 2005 shows on the Titan probe mission which were awesome and not even remotely "dumbed down".

As for History, I don't think it really dumbs anything down, but they do run heavy on WW2.

The point I was trying to make is that everyone likes different stuff, and that is how it should be IMO.

:)

heh, you're confusing the discovery channel and discovery HD - they play completely different material, with DiscoveryHD offering all the science and aww dropping goodies. Its almost like discovery used to be.

My friend's dad just got a bigscreen HDTV. I was over there a few weeks ago and her Dad and I were watching football on it. He switched it from regular broadcast to HDTV and the difference was like night and day. Maybe it was magnified by it being a big screen, but the regular definition broadcast was blurry and the colors looked muddy. HDTV was bright and crisp - we could see the heat waves from the portable heaters and the scratches on the football players helmets.

Now I want an HDTV - but I owe my parents a whole lotta money for college so I probably won't be buying one very soon

yea stores generally just show dvd signal on all their tvs. its sad. and the signal is generally split so much that its already badly degraded too.

Because you are blind. There is a HUGE difference, and if you can't see it, there's no in point arguing. It's like debating about politics or religion -- it's fun, but when you're done, you're back where you started.

I save myself the cost of a TV altogether, and simply download the latest HDTV captures on bittorrent.

Sure, I am a few hours behind but I work nights anyway and have the shows downloaded by the time I get home. At 1600x1200 20" LCD w/ Klipsch surround sound system on my PC, this is more than capable enough to enjoy perfect HD captures of my favorite shows

I've re-read the replies, and I have no idea where you got the idea that I am the least bit "pissed off" that you can't tell the difference. As a matter of fact, you are the one who is getting all hostile over this.

To the only extent that I give a rat's ass about whether or not you can tell the difference, is that it finally made me understand why you might think HDTV is completely pointless... And it made me realize how absolutely pointless this conversation is. ;)

As for "why the fvck" I (or anyone else) cares so much that you can't see the difference... One could ask the same for you. Why do you care so much that you post in many HDTV threads? :p

I bought a 32" one for $900 early this year. My other TV was fine but the few Xbox games that do play at HD resolutions won me over.
