Why are people so paranoid about tap water?

I have a bottle of water at work that I replace each week. After I've drank the original filtered water out of the bottle, I just bring the bottle to a water fountain and fill it up. I do this several times a day, so somewhere around 15 times a week.

I've had several coworkers pass me in the hall and say stupid shit like "You TRUST that water!?!?!?!??!!OMG!!:!MHBSDBSYF BUABD!!!!" Each time I respond: "I've been drinking this water for 2 years, and I'm not dead yet."

Now, MAYBE I could understand if you lived in a shitty neighborhood or something, but I work in Potomac, MD, which is in the top 10 of the richest places in the USA. You'd think our water is pretty top-notch.

Do people think tap water is ebola-infested or something? What the hell is going on?

definitely marketing. since i helped implement both new water systems all over arizona as well as did upgrades on many older citiy systems here, i know how good (or bad) the water is here. i drink tap water regularly. my ex will spend a fortune on bottled water.

I don't have an issue with it for the most part. However, at my work, they tell us not to drink the water though. We get unlimited bottled water.

At home, I drink tap.

Take apart a faucet that has not been opened for 5 years and get back to me on that. That said I am not paranoid about tap water, I just prefer water with some carbonation so I drink mineral water.

I drink out of water fountains all the time. I think it's retarded to go and buy bottles and bottles of water every week. If I want bottled water, I can pour some water out of my fridge into my own water bottle.

I don't really like the tap water in my apartment, so I have a Brita filter/pitcher. But the Brita filter is FAR cheaper than bottled water.

I trust the tap at home. Still put it through a brita though, but won't get squirmish about drinking out of the sink. Its just not cold enough.

I don't trust the faucets that the water is coming out of in public places.

It's not that I don't trust some tap water, it's just the simple fact that I don't want to drink something that tastes like it had sat in the bottom of a rusted out metal garbage can for about 3 years.

I used to live in Dubuque, IA which is rated as some of the best tasting tap water in the country. Where I live at right now, Central IL, the tap water is downright revolting.

I also happen to live in an area (including my own home) where we have lots of well water that can have a bit of a funky taste to it as well as a number little towns that can have a couple boil orders a year because of icky stuff in the water.

Some tap water can have a funny taste...but I really don't believe its less likely to be dirty then that crap that comes in bottles. Water has to pass potability standards.

Why do they always show a mountain stream in bottled water commercials? Bears shit in there.

I've personally witnessed two monkeys making sweet love in a mountain spring. There was also a beaver watching from behind a rock and I'm pretty sure he was whackin' it.

Nothing wrong with tap water, but I'm skeptical of fountains since all sorts of grody people do grody things to the fixtures.

I would rather drink running tap water than water from a bottle or office cooler. Who know how long that water has been sitting in that bottle. At least with tap water it runs constantly. Unless its Orlando water. Ug, FL water just reeks. 🙂

Unless the building has lead pipes or something, I honestly cannot comprehend what is scary about public faucets. I've been drinking out of the fountain at my gym for YEARS and have yet to die of ebola or mad cow disease or whatever else the OCD types get freaked out about. If anything, I'd be more worried about chemicals leaching from the plastic in a bottle.

If people knew how high the FDA acceptable level of rat hair/feces and bug parts in their food was, then water would be the least of their worries. It is marketing, pure and simple.

I have it on good authority that bears, in fact, shit in the woods.

Not as much about the pipes, but that exposed part where the water actually comes out. Yea, I know about the bug/animal parts in my food, but I don't mind keeping more of it away from me.

I watched a news story about bug parts in chocolate. Every single manufacturer (Godiva, Russel Stover, etc.) had bugs in their chocolate. Mmmmm, buggy goodness!
