Why are people so intolerant nowadays towards others?

We see it everywhere. From next door neighbours, to friends, to relationships, to roommates, to co-workers, to family members.

One good example (and indication) is that there are so many threads in ATOT about people's problems with each other.

Why is this?

Becuase most people are self-centered or inconsidirate or both.

Right, but why more so now that 20 years ago?

Degradation of society?

People have less of a sense of responsiblity towards others today than they did 30-40 years ago.

You can blame Elvis and the hippies, I guess. 😀

I wasn't around 20 years ago, so I can't comment. How have you determined that people are more self-centered than 20 years ago? Just curious..

Intolerance is like descrimination - everyone does it and half the time don't realize it.

As for the social aspect and impact, I see nothing wrong with not tolerating something that you yourself don't hold a value in or your principles deviate from. Otherwise, how do you hold true to your core beliefs.

For major things like Murder, Rape, robbery, I totally agree, but for minor things - why do people make such a big deal?

I think it's a function of the increasing population...

There's a pretty classic study of rats that talked about what population pressure did to their behavior. All kinds of deviant behaviors developed as the rat population increased in a finite environment (food/square footage/water)...

Most people have the Burger King attitude:

Have it your(my) way

Well I grew up in a neighborhood with lots of kids. We always played outside and with each other. We were rarely inside watching tv. Whenever I go home I am still amazed. There are still tons of kids but they are never outside. They never interact with each other. Half the time the parents think the other kid is a bad influence or crap like that. The kids are just becoming antisocial.

Hell and I am only 24 years old. It isn't like I am comparing kids today to 50 years ago.

Intolerant? Why you little...!

I hardly think ATOT should be cited as empirical evidence of intolerance, though, given that it's largely populated by people whose propensity for ranting is largely fueled by boredom.

Another thing, yes my mom still has annoying neighbors but guess what? We treat them with respect and all our neighbors try their best to help each other out. The problem has been as some of the older neighbors have moved out, a lot of the new people don't want anything to do with anyone. I understand privacy but when you don't even want to speak to people when you see them then I personally think something is wrong.

this isn't anything new.

you wanna talk about intolerance, let's discuss witch burning, religious persecution, and oh yes, the biggie - slavery and the general intolerance of blacks of the recent past

people just need to relax and not be such bitches. there should be like a week where everyone on the planet smokes up, probably would be the most peaceful week in the history of the world. lol

the hippie movement changed america. it said that social mores and rules are bad. this movement towards "freedom" became i don't have to try and understand before i hate. i can just hate because it "seems" like i disagree with someone else.

there is something to be said for cordiality and manners but they are no longer in vogue.

What part of the hippie movement was about hate exactly?

If I remember correctly, I have seen plenty of videos from "hippie" protests that turned violent. Especially towards the men and women serving the country during Vietnam. But I guess that isn't considered hate because they were right and the government was wrong.

I guess right after the hippies got shot at...
Especially towards the men and women serving the country during Vietnam.
So after they got back from Vietnam the hippies jumped them?
But I guess that isn't considered hate because they were right and the government was wrong.
What are you talking about? The government was right, we should have killed every last pinko bastard. WE CAN NOT LET COMMUNISM SPREAD!

maybe ppl are just pissed off in general. the world is a very messed up place and we know it. There is not an awfull lot to look forward to and that depresses and disillusions us all. I am getting pretty jaded in cynical too, but try not to contribute to the uglyness and negativity. Sometimes it only take a little effort to do a right or nice thing. I am having a big problem w/a coworker that I thought I had a relatively good relationship with. He attacked me verbally and insulted me personally. I was blindsided and never saw it coming. His words showed how much distain he has for me and it was suprising. I was half expecting an appology the next time I saw him but none was coming. He actually continued with the insults and added more. I dunno what his problem is, but I am nobody's punching bag. This was a nice job before all this happened, I wonder how this will settle out.
