They do it because it excites them. In my opinion they are cowards.

They have way too much time on their hands and want the world to know how good they are? ;)

It is a challenge.

It's both ethically and morally wrong, but some people just don't bother listening to their conscience, I guess.

I wish I knew. I spent most of this week cleaning up Sircam at a small business where the entire network got infected because the receptionist opened an eMail attachment. I'm torn between sending a thank you note, or wrapping my fingers around the virus writer's throat and listening to the sound of his windpipe cracking as blood spews from his mouth.

think about this, one of the big viruses that came out a while back caused an estimated 80 billion in expenses around the world. One, or a small group of people caused this, pretty amazing. I don't condone it, but you have to admit that kind of power is incredible.

To prove a point. That stupidity and bad programming can always be beaten no matter how big the company is? To make up for lack of genital size. To get back at that jock that kept kicking the author's ass.

Why do people murder each other? Why do stupid L users insist on not learning anything? Why are those CDW commercials remind me of several managerial people? Its life.

I'd be employed anyway. They do generate extra income but, frankly, it's not a pleasure to earn it when the unlucky recipients of the slimeball's work are panicking about the loss of production and the damage done. On balance, I'd certainly rather NOT have to deal with it even though I make money doing so.

I think I phrased it wrong. Im usually waking up about now ;)

I did not mean you wouldnt be employed anyhow, its just extra job security. Thats how I look at it (as I read about the latest virus from my OpenBSD machine ;)). But there are definitely better ways to spend your time.

we should start executing these people for writing them... no one escapes so they'll never dare writing them again.

none of that prison term stuff...

what power? the destructive power to fsck up people's lives and make life more expensive? i could take a gun and shoot somebody in the head. is that kind of destructive power deemed incredible to you also? is it awe inspiring?

these people that make viruses are lame-ass social misfits seeking vicarious attention. if that's admirable or amazing to you maybe you should re-evaluate your role models.

Because they are ignorant script kiddies who downloaded a virus generator off from a web site..

I mean how many of them came up with original virii?

what is sad is the people who open them up...They are the real stupid ones

I think first time should be a warning, and the second time should be termination for stupidity

I'm sorry, I won't do it again.

<---- couldn't write a line of code (or however you make a virus) if the fate of the universe depended on it.

Nimda was really close--real close to being successful at bringing down a lot of NT systems for good. Giving the guest account Admin rights is quite scary. If they change security settings of the WINNT folder where the SYSTEM has no access people will be royally screwed.

Cheers!

Because they can. Its as simple as that. It's a challenge, it gives you "bragging rights" to your little looser friends. Its the electronic equivalent to asking "Why do people do graffiti?", put their mark, and just 'cause.

Some people with low self-esteem and poor social skills like negative attention and validation. It's all about them, but they can't see beyond themselves to understand that.

I love those CDW commercials... :D
"I opened that virus just like you told me not to..."
"I'm off to crash the server, wish me luck..."
"Did you order than incompatible software I requested?"

Virus writers (whoever they are) are, IMHO, little sh!ts who do it just to brag.
