I heard that they get paid more if they have a family in the military, though I'm not sure how true that is.

They should make more money...

The average military person makes crap as it is anyway. So much for "risk my life."

Politicians would rather spend money on outdated, worthless technology and tax rebates for Megacorp. :(

A causin of mine in the Navy was trying to get a marriage based on him giving the girl $300/mo while he got another $800. He's a little scam artist.

Because the military injects them with a "flu vaccine" that has small microchips that latches onto their brain and tells them to procreate to produce the super-soldiers of the future. This is all in theory of course.

I think you're a victim of the media... are you IN the military? The media reports the families of soldiers because its a story, the regular joes who don't have a wife and kids aren't that interesting because they don't have a widow and father-less baby should he be KIA.

I know a few guys in the military and none of them have families of their own (ie wife and/or kids) and of all the vets I know, they weren't tied down until after their service.

However from your original question I take you really would want to know why a soldier would want to start a family knowing he's going to be in harms way. Well soldiers are people too, and do they not deserve things they want, such as a family?

Hah -- doesn't work. Infidelity is rampant in the military. The long absences of spouses makes the opportunities more common. Sad but true.

Because reporters cant rip your heart strings with a single guy heading off to fight who wont be missed by anyone.

Funny, in an ironic kind of way. While true, when you really think about it.....that's probably even more tragic.
Not being missed by anyone...what a sad and lonely existence.

Wasn't it in "With Honors" where Joe Pesci's character, Simon Wilder, is reading an obituary of a guy who had nobody to attend his funeral?

He said: "How could he die? He never lived."

Yeah, I agree that it is much sadder, but that's not what makes people go teary-eyed for 30 seconds when watching TV.

because the type of person who would sign up for the military is also the type of person that thinks they are supposed to get married at 18 and start having kids right away. it's just a cultural thing.

I'm going to assume an intended sarcasm. Otherwise that is one of the most ignorant comments I've seen here in a long time.

Probably because the military tries to strip the soldiers for love and affection, and then they get a greater need for those, ie starting a family.

You are such an idiot. I can't believe you wrote that. The same type of people are in the military that are in everyday American society moron. I knew quite a few guys that had very wealthy parents that wanted to break away from their parent's influence and make it on their own. Kind of a rebellion thing when they were young, they didn't like their parents (lots of 18 y.o. want to get away) and wanted to do something on their own as soon as they could. The military offers them a means to support themselves instantly. It's not a glamorous life, but it is a means to be self-sufficient, plus, they'll test themselves to see what they are made of, and learn a skill of their choosing. Some even love it after a while and make a career out of it.

Nobody in the military is having babies to get more money. The enlisted guys up to about E7 or so, don't make sh!t. They're borderline poverty-stricken. That extra money doesn't equate to more disposable income for them because they have to spend it on diapers, food, clothing, bedroom stuff, etc. Children add to the hardship, they require money and time.

Some soldiers, not many, (I'd guess less than 5% of any Basic Training cycle) do enlist when they knock a girl up. Then, they marry them to be able to provide some semblance of support because they have no other choice but want to do the right thing by supporting the child. The military offers them and their families free medical care.

Well, the military is a pretty set kind of life and just about everything is provided for. Think about it, these people are married and relatively well off. A lot of people wait until they are established to have children. It's pretty easy to be 'established' while in the military.

They are relatively well off?

Have you actually been on a military base, specifically the barracks and living quarters?

Non-pdf pay scale link

Granted the military provides them food and shelter and a fairly cheap subsidized Px. You take a car payment and insurance out and you have 400 a month mad money to spend on such extravagant options like clothes, edible food, toiletries and any form of entertainment, like gas money, cable or what not.

If you choose to live out of the barracks, the military gives you 200-300 or something like that for you to subsidize your rent.

Our soldiers who are dieing for our country and way of life are not living relatively well off.

a lot of young people wind up in the military because they got married/had a child early and that was the best job/career/path to further education they could find due to their situation and their youthfulness.. it's hard to find a better steady job with good benefits that will support a family when you're 19 with no skills.

Benefits...... The best healthcare and living expenses are so low that it would be stupid to not do that.

They feel it may be the last time they are able to have offspring. I don't know what causes this instinct in people...but it does seem to exist.

" clink ping" <-- Me dropping my 2cents in the bucket..

Being a former military person, it is made easy due to the following:

ALL Medical is paid for... ( look at the cost of having a child, even with insurance)
Your pay is impacted by the number in your family
Your spouce, who is possibly NOT in the military, has a part of you at home with them while your gone
Because of the above, there are several activities for parents with children, and the adults can hang out with other adults (while your gone)
Like I mentioned above, besides the cost of medical, all DENTAL, Vision, Hearing, is paid for. (or was for me)

All in all, if your in the military, and are planning on having children, do so while in the service. Because the pay is low, you tend to take advantage of all the benefits you can while in.

Again, this is just my opinion and some of the reasons I found. ( HM1 / USMC Heavy Guns 4th Mar Div)

You are uneducated or at the very least, ill-informed if that's what you believe. Our soldiers, sailors, and marines have to get continuing education (civilian and military) if they want to advance in rank and pay.
