the only thing you probably could 'reuse' is the RAM.. and i'm figuring that too won't be 'dual channel' ...

all else is the same with AM2 as well.. I would strongly suggest you get him into AM2 while you're at it.. there 's nothing to gain with staying with 939... unless u're carrying the baggage of some super duper expensive CAS2 latency DDR RAM.

All he'd be out extra is about $75 for 2x512MB of DDR2 RAM

Thanks River Side,

But I was really trying to keep it at or under $200. While $75 doesn't seem like much, it would be ~30-35% over my budget, which is a considerably high percentage. He doesn't want to do anything, as I haven't been able to convince him it would make much difference. Therefore, it will be coming out of my pocket. I guess I will just keep watching prices for awhile.

I love all the intel fanboys telling AMD's fanboys they suck for not upgrading! It's the same thing every few years. Amd beats Intel, Intel Beats Amd, back and forth back and forth. Who cares, I like AMD more then Intel, you lile Intel more then AMD hey cool let's move on.

Heck, there's people getting over a GHz overclock. That's in the realm of "amazing" even with Netburst CPUs.

I wish I was one of those people lol...Although I have an x2 which isn't an extremely super duper overclocker compared to single cores 🙂

I had two Opteron 144 chips which could clock really high, and one that couldn't (sold it with a Biostar Tforce motherboard for $150). I didn't actually test the absolute limits, but I know that they could do 2.7GHz (900MHz overclock) at or near default voltage, and they will POST well in excess of 3GHz (probably close to 3.2GHz, don't remember).

 That's the best part!

There are reasons for 939, mainly if you have a bunch of EIDE drives and a lot of DDR RAM. Why toss all that away?

LMAO! I prefer strip clubs, but to each their own.

Nonsense. There were a few chipsets for socket A that could handle dual channel such as VIA KT660 and Nvidia Nforce2 Ultra 400. It is very possible that someone with a socket A setup has dual channel capable DDR400. I know BITD I did.

Why buy AM2, Conroe Duo 2 at all?

AMD just EOL all of their high end 2x1MB cache AM2 X2's. That means they are making room at their production plants for the next generation cpu's.

The next generation cpu's have 4 cores, smaller die and they are more energy efficient. They are supposed to show up this year.

Maybe the current generation X2's and Conroe Duo 2 will both look very outdated in a near future?

So if you have descent rig. It might be worth the wait to see what's around the corner.

AM2 occupies the 'Mainstream' consumer market now so...it is still a vaiable choice if you are not an overclocker or want a budget system. But if you even OC a little or are a true enthusiast then conroe is the only path right now. People who by AM2 in hopes of AM3...well no help for them...

Link?

I might as well wait. Even though I have a very indecent rig now, I am already waiting for DX10 GPUs. I'm very happy to hear that New CPUs will be out around the same time.

Sorry no, in December we will be getting 65nm processors, but they are still 2 Cores like the Windsors are now.

why would u get AMD ??? also people who buy conroe and not OC .... are idiots , too

Speak for yourself. Just because I choose not to OC does not make me an idiot, nor does it give you the right to label others. Look in the mirror before you speak.

Why buy anything at all at any time? Just keep waiting forever for the "next thing around the virtual corner" and live vicariously off other people's purchases thus saving yourself thousands of dollars in the long run by never purchasing any computers or components at all.

Im sry, but that is one of the dumbest post's I have ever seen. SO in other words, just never upgrade and keep the same old computer and only be able to run "Solitaire" and wait 4 minutes for you'r computer to boot up. I think I'll keep upgrading

Going for a Conroe on that build would have cost significantly more for no benefit to the end user who doesn't game and just wanted to upgrade his 400MHz P2.

that's exactly why the OP said you should get S939 - it's cheaper and faster. The only difference is that when you upgrade in the future to Conroe you won't be able to use your DDR1 memory, but realistically the DDR2 you buy today is slow and overpriced, so for the next upgrade you will most likely purchase new DDR2 in any case.

And don't foll yourself about being able to reuse the AM2 mobo, by the time AMD has better CPUs which present an attractive enough upgrade option, you will most likely want a new mobo as well. In any case most people upgrading to AM2 now are thinking of Conroe as their next upgrade down the road.

So I agree AM2 is stupid

I like it.

In reality 9/10ths of you should be buying another or a second graphics card instead of a CPU.

When you have a 2.4Ghz or faster A64 or x2 there's very little need for more...a better GPU will do wonders where a CPU just can't.

Sarcasm. Some people get it. Others think of it as a seven letter "S" word.

You missed my point, which was to poke fun at the constant "waiting for the next best thing." I've actually known people to do that for way too long just because they hear (often rightly so) that something better was coming out... in the meantime they would have waited over a year and skipped a couple of generations (example in video cards).

I learned a long time ago to take a grain of a salt with half of these elitist overclocking gurus say on these forums. Like someone said earlier, the majority of PC users don't overclock and shouldn't be labeled as idiots just because they choose not to.

I choose not to overclock my PC because I just don't see going through the aggrivation of dealing with possible stability issues and heating issues when my system already handles every game that I play at 1920 x 1200 8x FSAA, 16x Anisotropic filtering with max graphics settings up. (World of Warcraft, Dawn of War, Oblivion, Battlefield 2, Tomb Raider Legends with Next generation also on) If I cared to wave my wang around and say "hey! I got my system this to XXX GHz and stable" then maybe I'd care, but I really don't.

Alot of you avid posters on these forums need to relax and let people have their own opinions in what they purchase and what they decide to do to their own system.

I for one like my system @ stock speeds. Not to mention that between the 4600+ am2 and the quad-sli in my system, it gives off enough heat as it is and the last thing I need is more.

As for anyone who's wondering why I didn't buy a Conroe, well:

#1 Newegg didn't have them at the time I decided to amp up my system one notch further.

#2 I only shop for my PC stuff at Newegg mainly due to the fact that I have a preferred member card from them where I don't have to make payments for 6 months if I order over a certain amount and gives me ALOT more flexability with my payments (generally which I pay off before the 2 months).

#3 They are reliable which is key for me (unlike other sites I have ordered from in the passed for example tigerdirect.com, mwave.com) so I don't mind paying 5-20 bucks extra depending on which items for the reliability and good customer service.

#4 I have used AMD processors for as long as I can remember and I have never had an issue with their processors so why switch?

#5 nForce chipsets are not readily available for the Conroe yet.

as for the person who was trolling calling people idiots if they purchase a conroe and not overclock, well its this simple. not all people need to wave their wang around and say "hey, i got my processor to this speed!" and go out spending $200-300 more just to get a water cooled system or an insane air cooling system. i personally got the overclocking bug out of my system a long long time ago when the athlon k7's were first released. i'd rather spend that additional money buying more memory or putting it toward quad sli (which i already have).

You're getting an FX-62? Wow, either you are dumb or deluded, or both. Considering an E6600 wipes the floor with it at less than half the price, plus when overclocked will be close to 30% quicker - geez, wise decision there!

I understand you being an AMD fanboy and avoiding Intel like the plague, but geez, there are better ways to waste money than on an overpriced and underperforming FX-62!

I guess AMD will love people like you who splash out the $$$ on superseded technology.

lol let the moron waste his money on a CPU that gets it's ass handed to it by something less than half the price. If anything it'll make me feel that much better when I finish building my Core 2 system, just knowing that some idiot out there paid way more money to build a system that's 30% slower.

Or heck if I wanted to spend the same amount the savings from the CPU would buy a faster video card, or maybe even some high end cooling that'll get that Core 2 up to 4Ghz+

^^^ math noob.

And frankly...the e6600 for most cases that he's using will NOT out perform the FX-62...

Even with quad-sli, he's still going to be gpu limited as the quad cores just don't push out enough horsepower for 1900x1200 8xaa/16xaf from what I've read... (driver/efficiency issues I'd guess)

Exactly. Games are going to support 2cores finally, so the gpu will be even more of a bottleneck.
It is a shame that crossfire/sli are so inefficient, while they are so needed 😛
My ddr2 2gb kit will outperform most ddr1 1gb kit (9k banthwith 44ns latency sisoft, and not even pussed them). Not even talk about ddr1 2gb kits.
am2 is a cheaper buy to get on ddr2, at least in the Netherlands it is. If i compare the 4k+ with the e6300.
