Why are P3s still so expensive?

OS

Lifer
Was looking at maybe buying a pair of P3s and modding my BP6, but according to pricewatch, P3 800s are still 150 bux!! What gives?

P4's aren't selling any better than crap and are worth less than crap, so Intel needs to make some money someplace.

Because too many people worship at the great altar of Intel and will pay twice the going rate for an inferior product....

because it's written in the shareholder's agreement that chips must be sold with a certain profitability
and Intel is greedy 😀

I guess by "greedy" you mean that they want to price their product as high as possible, while still maintaining a good rate of sell-through. Going by that theory, which corporations would you say isn't "greedy". Do you really believe that AMD wouldn't sell their cpu's at higher prices, if they were sure that they would sell just as many?

The real reason is basic economics, I would imagine. Intel probably believes that this is the proper price point for them to benefit the most. No different than any other corporation.

Intel is a established brand. It's made itself a name just like BMW or Mercedes Benz. For this sole reasons it's CPU's are world wide known as the best quality and indeed if you were to be honest they are made very well indeed. The performance is a seperate issue so no flaming here please. So the price isn't all that high bit it's higher than AMD chips to reflect that you are at the end of the day getting a better overall product. This is the image BMW does in it's cars and still sells many because people have grown used to such quality and refinment. The Pentium III is still a very good performer despite what people say, thus the price will be high. Do notice that the Celeron line is very nicely priced without much greed.

Will we see cheaper P3s before the supply is cut off and we are forced to buy Palominos - uh, I mean P4s? When is the P3 1.13GHz non-Tualatin being reintroduced? I'm hoping that this will drop the price of the 1 GHz.

Another reason they are not getting cheaper is that Intel wants to move everyone away from the PIII line to P4. The way they do that is by making it just as cheap to buy a P4 by keeping the prices similar. They've done this w/ every chip in the past as they phase out the old ...

thats why intel sucks. Intel recent price cut has made P3 933 more expensive than P4 1.4G, could that make sense??? either intel is trying to rush consumer toward P4 or just showing us P3 is certainly faster than P4 even clocked at lower speed.

what was that for? Wingnut was just speaking the truth. Corporations will do what they can to make money. If AMD where to become the market leader, I am sure we would see higher prices on their CPU's.

WTF????? Don't like it when someone knows what they're talking about???😉

Psssst, Wingznut, some peeps get a little testy when they're fighting with chipset "issues" and such. 😉

-His post was valid and did not need to be hammered by the likes of you. The immaturity level is incredible here.
