i was justat walmart. almonds, $8.99/lb. pistachios, $6.99/lb. walnuts, $7.99lb. wtf. it wasn't like this. its like every time they tout the health benefits of something, the price skyrockets on it. i want cheap nuts dammit.

And this too. On St. Lucia they showed us a cashew off a tree and explained how it gets to the edible stage. I don't remember all the details but it was quite lengthy, not exactly just drying it out and eating.

Just saw on "how its made" that walnuts take like 5 years to mature before harvest... Puts a new spin to the saying "like watching grass grow"...😛

The weather has been tough on the nut crop this year, plus apparently things like pecans are super-delicacies in China and they're bidding the prices up.

I had a bumper crop of black walnuts this year. Unfortunately I'm not a big fan of black walnut. The flavor's too strong. I much prefer English walnut. The squirrels had a good year :^D

Its hot in China, sell them

I thought about selling them. They're popular here for baking. They're extremely hard to open, and I didn't want to put the time in. I meant to see if there was a market for unshelled nuts, but never got around to it. They're almost all gone now. The squirrels really tore them up.

As an aside to others who may want to screw with them. The outer husk can blister skin, especially if you're sensitive, or become sensitive. If you handle these things on a large scale, use gloves.

is that from the abrasive nature of the shell or some sort of irritant oil in the shell?

Irritant in the shell. My father had to go to the hospital to get treated for the "burns" he got. A lot of hardwoods will do that too, and you can build up sensitivities over time. I've know people who had to quit playing blackwood musical instruments because it would cause their lips to swell. They started off fine, but over time became sensitive to the wood. I'm cautious around any wood/wood-like substance that has a strong odor, or is especially oily.

Try shopping at middle eastern markets. Nuts are usually much cheaper and of higher quality than at large chain grocery stores.

Dunno but pecans are a big deal around here...its hard to find em without worms...basically every pecan on a tree will have the inside being eaten by a worm if it wasn't treated with pesticides
