Why are nazis called "nazis"?

Where did they get that name? I mean, the political party was not called "Nazi-party", it's official name was Nationalsozialistiche Deutsche Arbeitspartei (AKA NSDAP). So where did "Nazi" come from? What does it mean? or is "Nazi" a shorthand for "NAtionalsoZIalistiche"?

Anyone?

Etymology: German, by shortening & alteration from Nationalsozialist, from national national + Sozialist socialist
