Why are nazis called "nazis"?

Where did they get that name? I mean, the political party was not called "Nazi-party", it's official name was Nationalsozialistiche Deutsche Arbeitspartei (AKA NSDAP). So where did "Nazi" come from? What does it mean? or is "Nazi" a shorthand for "NAtionalsoZIalistiche"?

It's an abbreviation. National when pronounced (beginning part) in German resembles Nazi.
