Why are my shorts overdyed?

I ordered some shorts online and on a tag it says they are overdyed and need to be washed separately to prevent bleeding. What is their reason for "overdying"?

The fabric absorbs more dye in the time between them producing it and you washing it for the first time.

It means that to get the most out of the colors you must wash them with all your whites.
