Why are my 512 MB of RAM being recognized as 448 MB?

My RAM:
1 256 MB Crucial PC133 CAS-3
2 128 MB Kingston ValueRAM PC133 CAS-3

That adds up to 512 MB, but after I flashed BIOS version 1007 for my A7V the readings are 448 MB. That's a pretty odd number regardless isn't it? I mean the difference IS 64 but I'm working with larger sizes...

It has something to do with the # of side per Module.. I dont know about the mobo but if you have 4 slots but only support single side module u can use 4 single side module or 2 double side module.. so your extra 64mb is probably on the extra side that your mobo doesn't support, ie if yours support 4 side and ur 3 module has 5 side, u lost the extra...

256 - 2 side = 128/ side
128 - 1 side = 128
128 - 2 side = 64/ side

assuming the kingston is single side or double side..

but i can be damn wrong.

Check your ASUS manual. It should list the type of memory you can use and even may have examples of how you can populate the slots.

But the thing is, the RAM was being reported as 512 MB before I flashed. So the question is, which BIOS is at fault. What is my correct amount of RAM? I do notice that my system is a little bit more stable since I've flashed, but this could be due to other things.

i had a 128 memory that died... only report as 64 and then a memory module error... did u test individual module and see if it sees the whole 128 ?

"No. Should I e-mail or call them? I don't really have time to call them right now."

If you can't make the time to call them then that 64mb of missing RAM can't mean that much to you.

When all else fails RTFM or call 1-800-HLP-ASUS or whatever.

You can always revert to the older BIOS. You just have to decide what's more important the 64MB or the increased stability you've reported since flashing.

Also if you have any double sided RAM just remove it and see if your RAM amount comes up properly. If it does then boot the system with just the dbl sided stick, see if it only comes up as half.

Try pulling out all the RAM except one stick. Reset CMOS (short the two little contacts next to the battery with a paper clip). Load all setup defaults in the bios. Restart and reconfigure your bios. Shut down and add the extra sticks.

Did you load setup defaults after you flashed before? You absolutely must.

hmm ive seen this problem before
i had a 128 stick that was being seen as only 64...iflashed bios to old again and then to a new DIFFERENT one and all was well again...try flashing with a new bios file...

thorin - I didn't have time right now, that's all.

rmblam - No I did not reset defaults. I'll do this right now and report back.

mosdef that's kewl. I know life can get busy. Easiest way out for now. Be happy with the extra stability and wait until you have more time to actually deal with the issue.

Best of luck,
Thorin
