Why are MS Word 97 files getting bigger when saved ???

Hi!

I have this strange problem, and not only me, I guess.
At home and at work I have MS Word 97, and if I write a document that is, lets say 100 kb after the first save, even if I do not add anything, if I push the save button for like 5 times in a row, the file gets to 1 MB in size. And so on, it just keeps increasing in size. Why is this?

On the other hand, my second computer at work has the same MSWord but never shows something like this. The file is as it is, it does not grow just from saving it.

Any help appreciated.

I checked with the latest Norton and MacAffee and did not find any viruses

Check for options in word to save summaries and revision histories. I remember this being a security & PR issue when company sends out word doc that has "deleted" text they really don't want people to see,
"- put the bid for the stupid jerk client here -" 🙂
or more seriously, bid information from another client, internal cost info before markups, etc.

It's not quick save. DaveSimmons is correct. Word has a feature that saves every little thing done to the document which causes it to grow even though you may not add anything or even delete some content. I don't recall where, but it can be disabled.

Sorry it's called "Fast Save" not "Quick Save".

I have Office XP and there is an option in Tools > Options > Save > Save Options > Allow Fast Saves.

The info for this option says:

"Speeds of saving by recording only the changes in a document. When you finish working in the document, clear the Allow Fast Saves check box so that you can save the complete document with a full save. A full save may decrease the file size of your document."

Maybe this isn't what you are looking for - just sharing info....

Good luck!

Thanks a lot. This was the exact thing. I disable the fast save and the file stops growing with each save. This was great, it was hard to imagine that a small innocent checkbox like this can make such a huge difference.
🙂
