I always assumed that libs simply hated anyone that disagreed with them. It's certainly what turned me away from the progressive movement.

That's your mistake.

Now, imagine by analogy there's a news event - 'bring back segregation event held'. You are with a group of progressives, and they say 'man, how horrible those people stand for that, what bigots'.

It might come across to you like 'they don't like people who disagree with them'.

But that's not it. It's that they don't like the harm, the injustice, to a group like the blacks who are the target - and have long been - of that bigotry. It's emotion of passion for the rights of the blacks. It can come out as anger at, disdain for, the bigots - very negative to them for their 'backwardness' - but even about them, progressives are 'on their side'; they don't want to hurt them, other than to get them to stop hurting others, and to 'develop' to realize the error of their ways.

Progressives are largely about that - against injustice and people who 'don't care about injustice'. They're for opportunity for everyone. They're for rational policies for the 'good of the people'.

They are not for 'big government' - compare JFK/LBJ/Clinton's government size to Reagan and on Republicans, despite their having a more progreessive agenda - they support some government that's 'good for the people', and are willing to pay for it raising their own taxes along with others'. Things progressives are especially in favor of spending on are good for the country - education, anti-poverty, jobs, resources to protect the public from the people who cheat, who are 'special interests' against the public interest, public or private.

It seems to me progressives are the ones who actually support democracy - the public votes to get something done, the public pays for it to get done, and it's done. Not just 'we hate elected government!'

That's not to be confused with supporting the corruption of government - when the people are led, with various means, to elect leaders who don't serve the public interest, and hurt it.

Progressives do balance that individual freedoms are unquestionable - and how the good of others needs some limits on him. One guy upstream can't pollute the river for everyone downstream. One industry like banks can't just pursue their own interests to where they're 'too big to fail' and they can economically blackmail the public to get financially exploited. Monopoly isn't ok. One industry can't increase its profits by polluting the environment where the costs are pushed on the public.

You can disagree with their positions on an issue and if your motives are good, not 'let you screw others'. you will get listened to by some. As in every major political movement, some are more ideological.

They don't trust things like big money from those who stand to make a lot of money by defeating the public interest to pay for propraganda think thanks and marketing campaigns to mislead voters and buy elections.

You should have higher standards for being on the right side of the issues, not just say 'forget them' for such a weak reason.

I base my association on the positions. The old 'I'd like to have a beer with him even if his policies are terrible' doesn't work (not that I'd like to have a beer with Bush, but many would, or would have).

You want to oppose the group with the right positions because you imagine they're not very tolerant of other views? Does that make any sense when it leads to bad policies?

As for openness to disagreement, enjoy the next tea party with your "We need more government stimulus" sign. I'm sure you will get a welcoming group.

A lot of liberals appeal to science without understanding that science is continuously changing. What is true today might be found to be irrelevant tomorrow. It's similar to those who blindly believe in whatever the Church tells them while ignoring the fact that what the Church says has changed over the past 1500 years.

What we need is some healthy skepticism...

Well healthy skepticism is built right in to science.

You said retard, I'm telling Sarah Palin.

Liberals are often labeled as unpatriotic, socialists, communists, unAmerican, or not part of "real" America. They get upset for the same reasons that Conservatives do when they are called poor-hating, corporatist, war mongering, unethical, silver-spooned religious zealots.

I don't think liberals sound any more smug than conservatives overall. It's like comparing the taste of a tangerine to a mandarin orange.

That's an excellent way to put it, and pretty much sums it up for me.

Although, to be fair, there really are more conservatives to which those labels apply then there are for liberals. I don't like it, but that's the way it is.

The real question you have to ask yourself is if it's a coincidence that 80% of teachers at every single level of education (grade school, middle school, high school, undergrad, and graduate) are overwhelming liberal, progressive and/or left-center in their political leanings. At some point you have to come to terms with the overwhelming reality that maybe, just maybe, you're wrong based on the evidence.

And engineers are largely conservative or libertarian, so does that mean liberals are unable to deal with the real physical world and can only survive in the world they imagine in their heads?

And engineers are largely conservative or libertarian,

In my experience, engineers (there are a lot of Chemical and Biotech engineers in my area) are largely either Democrats are Libertarians. Engineers generally evaluate issues on a quantitative basis. The sort of ignorant emotional appeals that the radical right uses to appeal to people are less effective with Engineers.

There are a few personalities I find particularly annoying, but for the most part everyone falls into the "normal" parameters for P&N. Of course we have a few people on both sides who are over the top. I almost believe one is a liberal taking the stereotypical bad points of a supposed conservative to appear to be an ass, or he is genuinely a bit, well, off. Another believes his preferred group he associates with is indeed superior, and if you challenge him, he tends to respond with "liar" and "idiot". IMO he's the sort of person described in the OP article.

So outside of the extremes, people sometimes make good points, and at others the same posters will just fail.

It's just being human.

Really? You're going to claim that Democrats don't use emotional appeals?

All the engineers at my school are staunch conservatives, which flies in the face of state's claims.

and I bet my school is ranked higher than his...

Thread Title: Why are liberals so condescending?
Quote in OP: Sums up my thoughts about the lib posters here. A nasty crowd of villainy and scum the likes of which the internet has never seen before.

Amazing isn't it. Its right there in front of your nose, but yet its so hard for you to see.

I'm guessing your quote in sig says most (including me) don't care about your thoughts. Thanks for the nested quote thing though.

I was making a point about "morality if there is no God" with that post.
Basically that all other attempts to come up with a basis for morality are non-sequitors and make assumptions. For example, I assume God, the atheist assumes the survival of humanity or an individual matters-- if there is no God, then our survival does not matter, nor do our actions. All that the moral atheist can say is "I prefer it to be this way, and I may have the power to make you act the same as me, but I cannot prove to you why one is better than the other".

Last time I posted this I just got several posts about "keep trying to justify your religious beliefs" or some other nonsense that didn't validly address my point.

Not nearly as much as Republicans. That's why the Democratic party failed to communicate on the Health Care issue. It takes time to explain the various components of proposed health care reform, and time to explain why it matters for the long term fiscal viability of the US.

"gut reaction" phrases like "death panel" and "socialism" and "government takeover" make really good 30 second sound bites that hit people's core fears and prejudices. The result was the rage and anger at Town Hall meetings last summer.

Looking down your nose at another school...hmm condescending attitude...

no looking down at all, just playing along with his claim about "engineers" "thinking things through" and are therefor liberal. We would be ultra liberal if what he said were true.

Your school is very likely ranked higher than mine. I'm not going to pretend that Temple (an inner city state-school) is great shakes in the grand scheme of things, though I feel it is respectable in Pennsylvania.

Bringing up school rank though... doesn't that make you an elitist? How's that Ivory Tower doing, LOL :D

just playing by the rules of the game you started-- claiming the engineers were more intelligent...
