And why do several inches difference amongst LCD monitors cause a tremendous price increase?

Because the demand has been relatively low, and according to a business formula that drives up the prices. Due to higher demand, prices went down (and so did the manufacturing costs).

Some analysts predict that the prices will rise soon, but I think they are full of it.

Very hard to manufacture. They have millions of pixles and subpixles. If even a few die, the monitor is trash (unless they sell it at a discount).

Most companies have a policy where a LCD (or is it TFT? :)) is not considered defective unless it has more than X dead pixels and there is less than N inches between them. In other words, you could buy an LCD which will have a dead pixel in each corner and in the center, and you won't be able to return it based on the "defectiveness" claim.

JohnnyKnoxville,

No kidding, they work beautifully with a CGA card and a 50-Mhz DX2.

Going from a 15" to a 18" LCD monitor results in about a 50% increase in the surface area of the display. Therefore, it's much touger to make an 18" display that has virtually no dead pixel.
