Do you de-thatch it? Looks like snow damage. You need to rake up the grass in the spring and get up all of that dead crap so it can grow.

My lawn is pretty dang nice, and I barely do anything to it - just fertilize a few times a year (Milorganite is the best), mow once a week at the highest setting, and de-thatch in the spring. I still haven't aerated my lawn yet in the eight years I've owned my house (first owner).

My best advice is to plant trees. Weeds grow well in direct sunlight. Grass is easier to maintain in shaded areas (not dense shade, nothing grows in dense shade).

Dethatch and reseed at least once a year. And when you reseed, you need to water it 3 or more times a day for a month.

that lawn is getting towards perfectly fine. Just let it be and eventually real life will show up again and it will look proper.
