Why are foreign taxi drivers always on the phone yelling?

I take a cab quite often, and almost every time that I get a foreign driver, they are almost always on the phone talking in their native language. Furthermore, they are never having a normal conversation - they always seem to be yelling at the person they are talking to on the phone.

Why is this?

Lots of older people don't quite grasp that they don't need to yell into phones anymore to be heard. I don't think it's specifically a cabbie thing. I have to hold the phone about a foot from my ear when I speak to my father on one.

funny you mention that, when i took a taxi 2 nights ago in Boston the driver was from Haiti and was yelling into his phone in Hatian, it was an odd experience...

+1 on this one, my mom doesn't get that her cell phone is clear.

As for the cabi thing I've seen all walks of people yell into their phone. Cabbies are on their phone because that's the one thing they can do to keep their minds active on their insane 12 hour shifts.
