My local dealer has a bunch of new 2004 Ford Explorers for $16,245 including destination charge. They are rear wheel drive and only 6 cylinder but the price seems low. That is cheaper than the Scion I will be buying at the end of the week. Good thing my wife does not know about this, she wants a Sport Utility vehicle.
Why are Ford Explorers so inexpensive?

Location should matter too, shouldn't it ? Are you sure that was base price with no rebates already included ?
I remember seeing the more recent Isuzu Rodeos going for around that price... with 4WD but bare everything else... and Isuzu makes one of the best 4WD systems. When I bought my '95... sticker for a V6 4WD was $27k.

Whoa, that's cheap! My parents bought a 1994 Ford Explorer in 2000 and according to KBB it was worth about $14K at the time.

Because Ford builds about 5 billion of them at a time and with the high gas prices they aren't as desireable as they were a year ago. There's just a ton of them sitting around the lots not being sold so they have to discount the crap out of them to get them to sell.

If they aren't 4WD that could explain it. It could also be continuing fallout from the Firestone tires explodey death thing, mixed with gas prices and the fact that the Subaru Outback is now a superior offroad vehicle compared to the Explorer. (New models anyway)
Seem to be power everything, 4 door 5 speed automatics. Retail price on the cheapest 2004 Explorer is over $27,000.
They produce tons and tons and tons. Lots of supply. And have you checked out the Honda CR-V? They're like 18k but they get 23/29 EPA mileage.

Heh, I bought mine during the height of the Firestone thing. Got it for $4,500, like $3000 under KBB or so. It's lasted too.
Someone convince me not to get a explorer now. They even come with a trailer hitch and 3500 pound towing capacity.
because they need to use the money to pay for that stupid $300m lawsuit (waiting to be appealed).
Get the Explorer. Under 16K, It's a steal. Even with 3K rebates it should be around 21K, according to Edmunds. So even with bad depreciation, you are getting a 5K head start, or 8K if you include the rebate.

Okay.
The Ford Explorer has less ground clearance than some mid-sized sedans. The gas mileage is horrid, the interior design is lacking, and it has a third row of folding seats, meaning it's basically an overglorified station wagon with 4WD. There is more floorspace in a 1979 Honda Accord than there is in a 2004 Ford Explorer. A Subaru Outback performs better for offroad applications.

Scion what? xB? I think Explorer is more car for the money if you can really get it for 16K. $24K car for $16K is better deal than $16K car for $16K.
