Maybe it's cuz i'm Chinese but I find it annoying to hear it across the computer lab where I'm at. Do they not know how to whisper? It's usually 2 people only. I can never hear 2 people too loudly speaking English. Once in a while I hear a group of people discussing homework in the lab so that brings an uproar, but it's a GROUP, and it's a bit hard to whisper. But 2 people? Whisper damnit. STFU.

why do they spit and "hock up loogies" in inappropriate places?
Why do they show up to work sick and coughing?
Why do they ignore stop signs, curbs, parking stall curbs, parking laws, parking signs?
And yes, why are they loud?

It's the CS majors here.

I try to avoid the CS labs as much as possible the few years I've been here. I found out pretty quick how bad they are. Lots of people joke about how it stinks in here due to all the stanky CS majors not showering, but really it doesn't... well most of the time anyway!

So last night I was working on a program and I needed to be there since it's a system programming for linux class. The first couple of hours, it was loud as usual with annoying, nerdy, awkward, etc CS majors, but it actually didn't bother me one bit as I was concentrating on my program. But as it got later, it got ridiculous. Most of them were acting completely retarded.

It's weird, cause that is very common in the CS labs (and it wasn't even a night where a big class has a program due at midnight or whatever), and there is almost no way the lab environment would be like that where I go most of the time to the EE computer labs. The types of people are just completely different.

They just upgraded a bunch of the computers in here over the summer... they are now C2D machines with FC6 and widescreen 20" LCDs. Just like the 19" LCDs that were replaced, WHY OH WHY do they buy monitors with built-in speakers? Honestly how can that seem like a good idea to have every computer have speakers, considering a lab environment shouldn't exactly be library quiet, but idiots blasting crappy music or watching retarded flash videos is annoying. If only they bought monitors without speakers, people would have to listen to their music with headphones (utilizing the headphone jack on the front of every damn computer around), just as any normal person would expect to.

In my experience the FOBs are quiet and the Americanized ones are loud.

And I assume we are talking Asians. I have never seen the term FOB used toward any other group of people.

Just a guess, but I think it may have to do with population density. When you come from a country where lots of people live in close proximity (and when they're over here, three generations will live in a single house), I guess you need to be loud in order to be heard. North Americans are not used to this type of population density, so we don't need to yell.

I believe it's just a lack of etiquette and manners as well as being oblivious to the cultural norm around them. I can give you a few examples.

I have 3 older sisters. The first two are not very Americanized. They are loud in public. In fact, my 2nd sister usually just hangs out with other fobs--that is why even after 19 years of being in this country, her English still sucks.

My 3rd oldest sister is closer to my age. She is very much Americanized but still hold the nice things from our culture. She is not loud in public. When she and I are talking about other fobs, we whisper. :D

Maybe because it's socially acceptable to be loud in China & don't know that it's rude here? From the documentaries I've seen of China, a lot of people are loud in public gatherings.

lol. It's true. The whisper/respect thing is more of a "western" trait. Go to China town and you'll have the slummiest/non-westernized people you can get. They are VERY open, have no problem telling people they are fat in their face and infront of others, talk behind people's backs then proceed to relay it all back to the target within the hour, yell in public, etc. I love it:). Wish I had remotely a portion of that shameless behaviour.

why do ABCs have such disdain for their own people?

it's called ignorance.

No no no.. nothing is worse than a lazy fob who spends his parents money to have half-assed fun at a university when he should be busy studying and learning the language. However, I have infinite patience for those who do come to the US to study and not dick around all day. Those are good fobs.

You know what I hate? People who don't understand the concept of personal space. For example, you don't stand 6" away from me in line at a store if I don't know you.
