Why are encyclopedias still around?

When I was a kid I had to use these awful old encyclopedias from 1954. I remember trying to look up stuff about the space program for a report in 6th grade. It said stuff like "someday we will use these rockets to go to the moon." Hardcopy encyclopedias are a waste of money and materials these days. Encarta or other professional encyclopedia software is the way to go. Updated easily, searchable, and way cheaper than 200 lbs of books that are outdated the moment they're printed.

I suppose they are good for kids. though, you can get probably more information now through lexis nexis and google.
