Why are encyclopedias still around?

It seems that they are still printed. And those websites are still trying to sell subscriptions. Why? We have Google.

For ppl like my 10 y.o. niece. Her parents know squat about computers. Last thing she needs is to be unsupervised on the internet. I told my mom to make sure that computer doesn't get online. As such, we bought her Britanica on dvd.

You take computer knowledge and internet availability for granted. Not everyone even has broadband... let alone the patience to sign on to the Internet each time they want to look something up... if they know how at all.

Because if I want an 8 year old to look up something on horses, I don't want them to have to sort through the endless barage of crap that shows up.

Searching for horses on google gets you links to ranchers, off track betting, a bunch of "this is my horse" sites, and the occassional "Watch this chick get pwned! by a horse" sites.

There's a whole debate on teaching our (not my kids lol) kids to learn with computers. They're not that great for learning. You learn to think how a computer thinks, systematically. There's been some studies that have shown kids learning on computers are far less creative than kids who learn and focus with a teacher. People lose touch with reality with computers.

I have the research printed up somewhere... let me try and find it. Well maybe not now, feelin kinda lazy..

If you looked up the subject on Google you'd see sales of printed encyclopedias are way down.

But:
- online / CD/DVD-ROM encyclopedias are doing well since they're tremendously more reliable than just using Google results
- as said above, not everyone has a computer or wants their kids to use it for all their research

It's just easier too. There's a reason that the eBook craze never amounted to anything, reading a book is simply much easier than reading the same thing on a computer screen. I still prefer my Encyclopaedia to the internet for basic research.

Agreed. I have problems reading more than a few pages online. I have to print it out and have it in front of me.

Not just that - but much of the information is hardly verified. The Internet is 40% opinion, 40% commercial/ads, 10% non-info type stuff (games, discussion boards, etc.), and maybe the remainder is solid material. And in many cases you need to pay for a registration to that solid material.

Yes, my internet cherry was popped by filthy pregnant women sucking large erect dogs. But I was about 21 at the time, so it wasn't so bad

But encyclopedias are so expensive! You could buy a computer AND Brittanica on DVD for that price. And you don't even need to connect it to the internet.

One thing I want for my kids is to have a set of encyclopedias at home. I know that learning how to use computers and the internet is an important thing, however, I want to give my kids a solid base of learning how to use real books first.
