Dremels are freaking loud especially cutting metal :)

Working on my case and it's unbearable.

It's essentially a miniature grinding wheel. At the speed that it spins, the bearings are bound to sing a bit, but the real noise is because it's not "cutting" the metal so much as grinding a very small amount away.

Typically you're supposed to use eye/ear protection using tools like that. But cutting sheet metal with a dremel? Well, :) That's why it's so loud.

i didn't think it was that loud when i used one to mod a computer case... i'm kind of a volume wimp, too. maybe older dremels were louder or something? or maybe there's just something about the wheel and the case that is resonating.

High RPM is bound to produce a high volume in such a small device. Think of it in terms of a high RPM delta 60 if you get my drift. Also, larger powertools produce loud noise at lower RPMs, due to their size. Of course, this is all just logical speculation:)

It's running at 20,000 rpms, did you expect it to be a damn whisper model?

Because the whole panel that you're cutting is becoming a big sounding board. Clamp it to something near where you're cutting, that'll help a little bit.
