Why are "computer people" stupid?

its starting to piss me off. Always saying sh!t like their so smart and sh!t, but they really dont know sh!t:

Whats ftp?
guy one: Can wireless cards connect to each other?
guy 2: no you need and access point
guy one: oh, like a place where the connection is?
guy 2: no where the server is

errrrr

please disregard my rant 🙂

lol - it comes with the territory. There's always someone somewhere who knows more than you do (and who laughs when you say something stupid).

i guess, but errrrrrrrrrrrr

I went to my local PC World the other day to install a redundant back-up dail-up modem - the sales staff tried to sell me a ISA modem saying it's a standard V92 which fits all computers.

It took me over an hour trying to explain to him that ISA died long ago with all his brain cells

If someone is very literate in English, I still don't expect them to be able to quote every book by Shakespeare and Chaucer.

Likewise, if someone is very computer literate, I don't expect them to know everything. Computer science is a fairly broad field... if someone's an expert in programming, why would you call them "stupid" if there was some knowledge that was relatively common to networkers, but that they didn't know?

That example is better....

The wireless example....well, I know alot about computers, but I am lost when it comes to wireless. I just never used it.

because they are liars? some people clean a virus off their pc and all of a sudden become gurus.

Just like every other field, "computer people" is becoming more and more diluted a term. If you consider a "computer person" someone who knows a lot about hardware you could break it down into PC, server, networking, diagnostic, repair, etc. etc. And even internet has security, HTML, merchant services, etc. It's a full time job just to be an expert on a single big site like Ebay. I and most ATers I imagine know a good deal about all the things I mentioned but NOT ONE of us can know it all about all of them. Twenty years ago it was much more possible, but it gets harder and harder to be a jack of all trades in the "computer" world every day.

"Computer people" is such a broad term. There are a ton of programmers at my job that know programming inside and out, but don't know the first thing about hardware. I've had to help them do the simplest tasks ( I do desktop support). But, I'm sure I'd look like I dolt if I ever tried to do their job, because I don't know jack about programming.

This topic says a mouthful. Thanks for letting me know it happens other places than where I live. 🙂

i ran into a guy bragging about overclocking his new rig, an AMD 64, and i was interested, because i think he had a similar rig to mine, and i ask him, what kind of MB and ram he was using. He told me he didn't know the name, it was some brand they had on sale....

damn.

Fixed your post. Funny thing is, it is possible for two wireless cards to connect to each other. 😛

His idea of overclocking was probably adding thermal paste. 😱

i figured it was posted that way to show the ignorance of the conversation. I assumed ad hoc was "given" in the post.

I am A+ certified, but I have knowlege to back it up (i don't talk about sh!t I don't know, unlike some people I know [hints at previous threads of his])

I am a computer engineer and I can design circuits for microprocessors and I understand a bit about computer architecture, but I can't tell you the first thing about networking or overclocking a PC.
