Why are churches exempt from noise pollution laws?

The church down the block always blasts their damn bells over the loudspeaker every hour even in the middle of the night everyday. The bells ring for 15 mins at 6AM even during weekdays.

I'm a light sleeper and this is really annoying. It's the modern age. I don't need to be reminded that it's 3AM by 3 loud gonging of bells everyday. I can easily turn to my LED clock if I want to know the time.

Why are they allowed to do this and why do they even bother? It really pisses me off.

Move. I've never heard church bells from anywhere I've lived.

In fact, I don't think I've ever actually heard church bells...

Its not actually a bell. Its a recording of one blasted over 4 of those horn type loudspeakers pointing in all directions.

I did a search on it for my town and the church is exempt.

Noise

Nothing herein contained shall be construed to apply to church bells or chimes; or to prohibit playing by a band or orchestra in a hall or building or in the open air where duly authorized; or to municipal, county, state, federal government agencies, utility companies or employees thereof in connection with any emergency; or to normal working activities of or activities sponsored by the borough; or to warning devices on authorized emergency vehicles; or to horns or other devices on other vehicles used only for traffic safety purposes; or to any motor vehicle which compacts or collects refuse. The provisions of this chapter shall not apply to:

What a load of BS. If I rigged up my stereo and subwoofer to blast out chimes every hour, I'd get thrown in jail.

M4H, good idea. I might have to consider that. ;) I seriously was thinking of pulling up a ladder and ripping those speakers down. :p Too bad they don't make anti-noise generators so I could blast it out of existence.

Interestingly.. I have a problem with the goddamn animal hospital behind my home.

City Noise Control: "we don't deal with ANY animal noise whatsoever, that is Animal Control's jurisdiction"

Animal Control "the clinic is exempt from regulations under "kennel or similar facilities" provisions"

City zoning and planning dept "the clinic is grandfathered into the location as commercial property"

seriously, there's a loop hole problem.

in other cities, noise ordinance says something like 'we don't cover animal noise, EXCEPT commercial sources"

If the clinic was making non-animal noise, the noise control have authority, but since it's animal noise, they're let loose...

seriously dude, get one of those branch clipper things, the long rods with a blade on the end, and a rope hanging down that you pull in order to close the scissor like blades. Just snip the wires.

I'd probably ask them if they could lower the volume first though.

Had abig controversy over taht in corpus. A church would do that, and there were several times when it went before city council. don't remeber how it was resolved.

Haha! Good idea. I just happen to have one. Maybe I could just snip the speaker pointing in my direction. ;)

maybe you can get them on the fact that, as you said, they're not actually bells. it's a recording of bells.

They do - I call mine a 'rifle' Take pot shots on the loudspeakers - the cone should be just about dead center towards the back of each one. After the second set of loudspeakers, they'll get the idea.
