Why are Chevy Lumina's so popular

They were the cheapest larger cars available for a while, and they have no resell value. So you can get a lot of car on the cheap.

Cheap ugly car + 22" rims = Respect in the Ghetto apparently

For the same reason McDonalds is popular.

..having owned a Grand Prix which is basically the same car. I can say that it actually is good comfortable transportation that is pretty cheap and roomy. Of all the cars I've driven on a long trip, it was the only one that left me feeling without fatigue after 400 miles. I won't call it a great car, but I kind of miss it. But at 250,000 miles... it was time to hand it on to someone else.

Rented one for a week once.

I could not believe how bad the brakes were. I would have to slam them hard to get the car to stop. When I went back to my car when I got home, my family almost flew out the windshield because I was slamming my brakes the way I did in the Lumina.

My dad bought a 1995 lumina with 30k miles in 2002 for like 6500 and that thing is up to 140k miles and has had no problems. That thing is like a tank. I'm not sure if he just got lucky with his or they are that reliable.

They are cheap, spacious and do the job, they are not only popular in the Ghetto, these are fleet style cars after all.

Oh and you can navigate a golf bag / bodies into the trunk with ease 🙂
