Why are cell phones crippled with a bastardized version of caller id?

Is there any specific reason why Called ID on cell phones can only display the number and not the caller's actual information?

Also, I don't understand why all the secrecy when I call a provider and ask them who the cell phone number belongs to.... Had they called me on my home phone, they're name would've been conveniently available on a little screen for me.

Even if they called from a cellphone? I don't think so.

Whenever I call anybody, my name shows up on caller ID....I only know one person who manually blocked his caller it, but that also blocks out the number from showing up. By default, names show up even from cell phones.

Interesting. My calls only show my number (or sometimes "Private Caller"). Unless the phone I'm calling has catalogued my number and someone manually entered my info.

What service provider do you use? I know t-mobile doesn't block it unless you request it, and same with cingular. I"m not 100% sure about verizon though.

as long as the person calling me is not private or blocked it only shows the phone number and my phone also displays the state from which the call is coming from based on the area code but that is it =
when our house phone is called though again as long as not private or something it generally shows the persons name or company name.
if ic all my hosue phone with my cell it shows my name

Thats a good point.
I noticed it recently with my new digital home phone service from the cable company.
I can get the name and sometimes location, but a cell only has the number, and often times nothing.

With all the telemarketers and such its nice to be able to screen properly.

Some cell phone providers here have another service called 'name display' which they charge a premium for. That one, obviously, displays the person's name.

When I call home phones on my cell phone, their caller ID displays my dad's name. But I agree, it's very stupid that cell phones don't do name caller ID.
