Why are cars on Ebay so cheap?

I've been looking at Carmax and then I've been looking at Ebay. Carmax says they sell their cars cheaper than blue book value.
Ebay sells them for 1-6k cheaper.

Buy it now price is set low. Not the bids.

I've bought 3 cars off ebay. If you do your homework you will be ok. But I did have one bad experience out of the 3 cars. However with the deals I got it was still worth my time.

I don't like ebay for getting a car. I just hustle the dealers now...

Just closed a deal on a car on Thursday.

I have 3,000.. What can I get for 3,000 that will last.. I am in college, dont care about looks or performance, to the extent that I will not drive a granny car like I have been for the past 3 years untill it caught fire.

You can probably find a 98+ escort, elantra, etc with about 70k for that price...

Tell me about auto auctions... Is it something everyone can go to? How reasonable are the prices generally?

I actually looked that up, on the 240sx's.. but.. yeah.. thats like 150,000 miles.

while thats alot of milage, the japanese really do know how to make a long lasting car...id say thats still got life in it for a long time

and how do you find out about where an auto auction is.. how do you get to one.. yeaah that could be good. What prices are auto auction cars generally?

Ebay is how dealers get rid of bad cars... you know, ones with impending engine problems such as bad head gaskets/cracked heads, unusual oil consumption, etc. Private sellers are probably a better bet.

Ebay is also chock full of "it's too good to be true" scams on big ticket items like motorcycles and automobiles.
