Fair enough but the superiority of the GTO2 then is more a product of chance than an overt move.

I would say a 100% confirmed OC rate is beyond "chance", but thats just me

What I mean is the success of the gto2 is more a product of serendipity (or stupidity by ATI for not locking the pipes). ATI didn't market the gto2 on the basis of its overclockability.

That is true I suppose, and if the question is simply "why does ATI market their cards more expensively than nVidia" then I will have to remove the GTO^2 from my example, but regardless of the marketing department, someone at ATI made this card available. In the same theme, can't we then call the 6600gt (which prior to the GTO^2 I considered to be the most impressive card of the last gen when adjusted for price) something of a matter of serendipity or stupidity as well? I don't think nVidia really planned for people to reccomend the 6600gt over the 6800 vanilla even without factoring in price.

Regardless, I get what you are saying.

ATI cards, as a trend, are not more expensive. The X1800 series is simply newer, so it hasn't had the 2-3 month price settle period that GPUs go through. The X1800XL, for example is still selling for MSRP, which cards tend to for their first month. After a couple months, deals start to pop up all over the place.

As others have mentioned, ATI is selling some of the hottest cards right now - the X800XL and especially X800GTO2 are two of the best cards for the money you can buy.

Premium/top cards always demand a price premium, so the X850XT PE and 6800Ultra, for example, will always be overpriced in retail channels.

Just wait a couple months and prices will settle on the X1800XL. And once the X1800XT comes out, wait on that one and I assure you it will go down in price as well.

By your logic, the X1300 should sell for $600 simply because it's new and/or in short supply, which clearly isn't happening.

Not really. By my logic, the X1300 should be overpriced. And by overpriced, it could be 150 and up (based on performance). Not 600$ specifically. So my point is, new cards are always overpriced, but not necessarily insanely overpriced.

The X1800's may be more expensive, but just think of all the money you will save heating your house.

In the 1960's computers took up an entire room. In the 2000's they heat up an entire room.

I see a pattern here, something to do with rooms... Hmmm

LOL thats funny. I cant have 2 of my machines powered up at the same time without opening the door to my office. Otherwise the heat makes me run away. And I have air conditioning and a ceiling fan moving the air.
