Why are Asian Men always portrayed as asexual or geeky?

Go see Hard Boiled, The Corruptor or most other Chow Yun Fat films.

Jackie Chan directed movies aren't usually like that either.

Blame the Chinese Opera and and the American's purchasing power and taste.

I mean at least the Mr Charleyman from Breakfast at Tiffany's perception of Asians has been tossed out the door.

You don't think it's a legit complaint? We didn't ask for this sterotyping and we want no part of it. What i want to say is Asian men are just like any other, white, black, hispanic, etc etc. I am just sick of how society skews it views of certain ethnic groups because of crap from hollywood.

Case in point: the small penis remarks. Guess where that came from? I wonder if people who say that Asians have small penises actually stare at asian scholongs all day.
No one asks for stereotyping. If asians had big schlongs, wouldn't we see them in porn more often?

There are three magical steps to fixing your problem with hollywood.
1. cry river
2. build bridge
3. get over it.

The dumb Americans are just angry because no matter how large their penises are, they can't get our salaries.

BTW: I really liked Ken Wantabi's charachter.

Go see "Better Luck Tomorrow." I bet you'll change your mind about what Hollywood shows Asians as.

Yes I heard great things about BLT, but it was an asian american directed movie so its perspective on asians are far different than what the rest of Hollywood is doing.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was NOT a Hollywood movie. It was made by asians.

I don't like the director of CTHD, Wayne Wang. Especially after that excrement known as the Joy Luck Club. I don't know if this guy has an agenda against Asian men, but I think he just panders to Hollywood.

I think most asian men are too insecure so they have to complain about stuff like this.

You don't see me complaining because Jews are generally portrayed as docile people or that Cubans are usually associated with Scarface.

I think it's a complaint not worth any time exploring. If you aren't part of the stereotype, then what do you have to worry about? I can only imagine that the stereotype offends you because you're afraid you'll be viewed as being involved in it. That comes from an insecurity with yourself.

As for the small penis remark, I was my ex's first non-asian boyfriend and she didn't deny the small penis thing. 😛

Yes I love Hard Boiled, but look at the Corruptor. That is just a waste of Chow Yun Fat's abilities. You compare his character in HK movies versus the crap he's made in Hollywood and it's night and day. The reason is that the writers and directors are shoe horning him into existing perceptions of what they think Asian men are like. It doesn't take much to connect the dots.

actually the director of CTHD was Ang Lee. he did not direct Joy Luck Club. Wayne Wang did, like you said.

Yes, but I liked seeing Mira Sorvino as a seductress...whoops mean't the Replacement Killers not Corruptor. You think the Corruptor was bad, then check out Bulletproof Monk. CYF plays a Chinese Eddie Murphy in The Golden Child 2.

the reason why asians aren't in porn or leading actors are becuase we all are so good math that we puruse other jobs. or we're so good at martial arts that we become stuntmen or ninja masters.

Or become proprietors and open up restaurants

I've never noticed that all Asians are viewed like that.

In TV it certainly isn't the case as I've noticed lots of Asians play 'real' characters like psychiatrists, doctors, etc.

In hollywood, every asian man you come across is either an asexual geek or a kung fu chopping mafia type hit man. I cannot recall the last movie where an Asian man is portrayed as a character with real depth.

If you take Last Samurai for example, it was nice that the movie portrayed the Japanese characters as a noble, spirtual people. You can even say that the men were masculine since they kicked some ass with their sword fighting ability, but there was no character development even with that Kasamoto guy who was Tom Cruise's co star. All he did with spew senseless philosophical cliches like Chow Yun Fat did in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

And that is my rant.

I don't know the answer but your username is GREAT!!!

They are the ones getting paid to play these roles, why not take it to them? In the '80s you could say that a muscle headed white guy shooting sh!t up was a stereotype. Machine guns were/are whitey's kung fu. The majority of movie to be released are action movies, and area where asian males are most successful. Looking to movies to be some kind of a barometer of social acceptance isn't going to be worth while for anyone. Movies are about selling tickets to the group that they are being marketed to.
If being philosophical isn't good enough for you then besides action about the only thing left is romance. You are desperate for a romance movie with an asian male as the lead character?
