Why are Asian Men always portrayed as asexual or geeky?

In hollywood, every asian man you come across is either an asexual geek or a kung fu chopping mafia type hit man. I cannot recall the last movie where an Asian man is portrayed as a character with real depth.

If you take Last Samurai for example, it was nice that the movie portrayed the Japanese characters as a noble, spirtual people. You can even say that the men were masculine since they kicked some ass with their sword fighting ability, but there was no character development even with that Kasamoto guy who was Tom Cruise's co star. All he did with spew senseless philosophical cliches like Chow Yun Fat did in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

And that is my rant.

But you need to go see it. It talks about how SOCIETY (ie. not just Hollywood) views Asians in a certain way. It puts things in perspective.

i thought Kasamoto (sp?) was a pretty deep character. his morals and beliefs were deeply rooted in the Samurai code, while he was intrigued by Western culture. i thought Kasamoto learned from Cruise as much as Cruise learned from the Japanese culture.

That certainly rings true. I find it odd that Asians are presented as docile, quiet people when history has shown they can be ferocious, determined fighters. Look at WWII, Korea and Vietnam in recent history. Also, Asian gangs are some of the most cruel and vicious there are. Not exactly complacent and friendly...

I don't like the director of CTHD, Wayne Wang. Especially after that excrement known as the Joy Luck Club. I don't know if this guy has an agenda against Asian men, but I think he just panders to Hollywood.

John Cho seems to be doing fairly well in avoiding those types of parts. Of course, this is based only on the American Pie series and BLT. I didn't watch his WB show.

You don't think it's a legit complaint? We didn't ask for this sterotyping and we want no part of it. What i want to say is Asian men are just like any other, white, black, hispanic, etc etc. I am just sick of how society skews it views of certain ethnic groups because of crap from hollywood.

Case in point: the small penis remarks. Guess where that came from? I wonder if people who say that Asians have small penises actually stare at asian scholongs all day.

Seriously, I'm not really sure why its like that. Asian men hardly ever get a leading role, and when they do they usually don't even get the girl at the end ("Kiss of the Dragon" comes to mind) I find a lot of the Asian movies that make it over to the USA entertaining because they have some wild ideas and go in totally different directions than the standard hollywood crap; which basically just follows the same old formula over and over again. I wish I had a good answer for you...but the best I can come up with is there's just less Asian men interested in hollywood acting. Maybe they don't see it as their thing, or something they can be successful at. (and they may be right, judging by how they're usually portrayed)
