Why are all the low end cards garbage?

OS

Lifer
There are a bunch of sales on budget video cards this friday but I looked up the benchmarks for all of them and they're all garbage. What the hell. The thing is, my card is a radeon 9100, which is old as f*ck and all those cards are either just as slow or barely any faster than the 9100.

cus lots of megabytes + low prices =many (unhappy, i expect) customersl (OMG IT HAS 256MB OF MEMORY, THATS THE HIGHEST U CAN GET SO IT MUST BE THE BEST!!!!!)

And most of the PCI-e market is comprised of the same low end sh1t. nForce4 and ATI Xpress are right around the corner and the availability of top PCI-e cards is truly dismal.

Bastaads!

What I like about the PCIe maket right now is that there are a lot of nice midrange PCIe solutions like the X700 and 6600 cards being offered at nice prices (at least at Newegg). $172 shipped is not a bad deal for an entry-level X700 Pro. The 6600-series cards seem quite plentiful and nicely priced. This is especially good for those of us looking to get a single 6600GT with a NF4 SLI board and then add in another GT later for a cheap performance boost.

simple, marketing!!! not all people can afford those high end rich man's stuff... even if they(include me) can save a few bucks each day and afford it one day, i would still not be willing to shell out my hard-earned cash for a high end video card just to satisfy my thirst for eye-candy graphics... thus, to some(if not many) these cards are not garbage at all... hence, you get what you pay for... 😉

Saving money is better done by buying used older generation mid-to-high class cards instead of new underpowered cards.

It's not that this is something new 🙂

I think you guys are missing the point. The 9100 is like 2-3 years old and costed the same back then as the budget cards do now. In 2, 3 years there has been basically no improvement in performance at this price point.

Because, big numbers make thing sell to uneducated consumers.

Things like "Celeron, 2.8Ghz" or "Radeon 9200SE, 256MB". Same difference, really.

You're just too smart for their marketing dept. 🙂

PS. I'm currently running a 9200 (128-bit) card, so we're in about the same performance boat.

If only you could find brand-new-in-box Ti4200 AGP 8x 128MB cards for $50 on retail shelves, instead of FX5200 garbage. :| (My local Wal-Mart has had some PNY Ti4200s on clearance for ages now, but they're still marked at $150. LOL.)

Yeah, they always keep it the same.

There is no need for more power with these POS cards because they're gonna be running internet apps.

I know what you mean. I spent $45 on a 3Dfx Voodoo3 LE, and it was awesome. The I upgraded to a $60 Radeon LE, and after a bios flash to make it a full Radeon, it was awesome. I then spent double that to get a $120 GF4 Ti4200, ans it has been awesome for the price. I would now like to spend about the same amount for a better card, but there seems to be NOTHING out there to upgrade to...the low end (< $120) really is garbage now, at least for AGP...

But for PCI-E theres the X300. Equal to the 9200 but one difference, the X300 overclocks very well. My overclocked X300 outperforms a 9600XT.

The old cards you mention were all mid-range cards, just the lower clockspeeds. They were no the low-end cards at the time, they had decent memory bandwidth and the full number of hardware units.

You didn't pick up a GeForce MX or ATI equivalent, this is why the situation from the past appears better to you, but it actually wasn't. You just made smart choices.

I run HL2/Doom3/etc on a geforce 3, vanilla..on medium details @ 1024, it's not awesome, but it runs just fine. I paid 50.00 for this card 2 years ago.

But i cracked and got a 6800 last night. I think you could find a semi-old card that would run current games just fine. Can't tell you specifics tho, as I haven't kept up with the market.

i think its to confuse you.

They confuse people with the naming conventions..

At first it was

Voodoo 1/2/3, Geforce 1
then
Geforce 2 MX, GTS, Ultra
then
Gf4 TI4200, etc
then
GF5 FX29382 ULTRA EXTREME
then
GF6 6800 GT/Ultra/Ultra Extreme/etc..

stupid.
