Why are all posts about cable/dsl sharing?

This "networking" board has become nothing but cable/dsl sharing troubleshooting. Anyone have any thought about this?

The simple answer, which you may have already figured out is that Cable/DSL has exploded. Now people want to share that bandwidth, so hundreds of thousands of people with absolutely zero network experience need help. I am with you, I am sick of it. I believe their needs to be a new forum topic. Internet sharing. Would give this forum back to the legitimate network crowd. Having said that, home networking is networking. Just a shame those that post dont at least look down the list and find there exact question posted with answers.

Well we could all just use my solution. I just stopped answering the "OK I just got cable how do I network" questions. Might as well throw in the "I just bought (insert cheap router here) how do I use it"? Not to mention the "which NIC, router, hub, switch" is best, and the ever popular "should I get a hub or switch"? Oh, and how could I posible forget the "How do I get w2k to share with w98" question. Did I leave any out?

All they have to do is just read the freakin' manual that came with the router or a network kit. Many of them have explanations in plain English about how to setup a network, including Internet sharing. Or as someone already suggested, "Search"! Make something out of $50 they pay for their dsl/cable service.

What I hate is that it is supposed to be part of this forum topic when it isn't the job of a forum to awnser these questions, all they need is a guide.

every time I point out to someone that their question has been asked and answered a hundred times, I'm told "Well where is it then, I looked and couldn't find it." I know they are thinking "asshole" even after I take 30 seconds to search and reply back with several links

What harm is it if somebody askes the same question. Maybe they don't have the time to do a search. The forum is here to us to inform and help each other out. It seems anymore that people are turning into a bunch of snobs and burn a guy for asking what may seem like a dumb question. You don't have to reply to a questionif you don't want to. What do you get out bashing somebody that asks a question about something they do not know about.

With more and more cities just getting Cable/DSL internet, there are alot of people trying to learn about internet sharing. Give them a break and help them out. Just think about what it was like when you were excited about something new to you and wanted all information you could get about it.

I think people should lighten up alittle. We are all here to help one another not to flame!

yes, I reasearched. I tried it out, I read the manuals if necessary, I did searches at bookstores or on the internet... in fact I still do this because there is always something new to learn.

a search most often takes far less time than it does to wait for the answer to a question that has been asked five hundred times before. it is especially annoying when there are two or three threads on the same page on the exact same subject.

you cannot fault a person for ignorance, but I place fault when that person shows no initiative nor any common sense.

As i see it, Cable/DSL routers are part of networking. I own one myself. And each time somebody asks a question about one there is a chance that somebody will reply something about them that I did not know. There is a chance that I learn something new about a particular brand of Cable/DSL routers that I do not own but would like to know how others compare. What harm do these people cause you. It is not like this forum is jammed packed with other Network Questions. I also use the search alot when I need a question answered I usually end up finding the answer to it in another post, and I never have to ask anybody for an answer. But that is only because somebody else asked the question before me. If you are tired of answering old or maybe stupid questions, then don't answer them. Why have most of you people turned into such snobs? The way I see, ask those stupid questions. That is what the forum is for.

Sometimes, people spend more time posting a &quot;Don't post that crap here without doing a search&quot; type of post than they could have done just answering the question...

If you don't have the answer, why not just skip over the post...If you do and feel like answering it, than please do...otherwise, skip over it...

I agree with Wik....lighten up....We all come here for the same reason...or at least we should!

I think that it is such a popular topic becuase it is most people's first reason to get into networking. I know the only reason I networked my home puters was for ICS. That being said that is exactly what this forum should be used for I think. There is alot you can do networking wise with your DSL. Such as a linksys router, firewall setups, how to use the disk booting linux router pc's, and even how to properly configure the protocols on a windows gateway machine. If the numbers of posts bothers some of you, then what could be done is to create a post that explore's most of these options, then refer new posts to that one.

You're missing the point... simply asking question is not bad. After all, that is the purpose of these forums. It's asking the same question again and again that is an issue. When the same question is posted by three or four different people so that they all show up on the same page or within a day or two of each other... that is simply laziness.

Show some initiative and some intelligence by using the resources provided by these forums... resources like the ability to look at 2 or 3 days worth of posts on the fly... or using the search above to find the answer to your question.

I agree with spiff, it is just lazyness on the part of people who post the &quot;why doesn't my router work&quot; threads. If you get rid of these posts then the forum would become one where people could learn about networking and get past the basics. I am not saying that it is wrong to post a dumb question, I am saying that the repetitiveness just shows lazyness.

If you agree with me, show that you do by not responding to these posts. Eventually people will stop asking these repetitive questions.
