google: deleted if you're on android, then download apk, then install apk, problem solved.

I know you were not telling us how to pirate the app because that would not be allowed.

Yes the ads are very annoying. Especially in landscape in full screen mode. I have to exit full screen then close the ad then go back in to full screen mode.

No, I'm not going to use an app. No, I'm not using a different browser. No, I'm not installing Adblock. I'm all for sites trying to monetize, but the ad system is just annoying.

So you are saying you want them to keep doing what you find annoying and you refuse to do anything on your end, even if it means utilizing the whole point to having a smartphone?

Really guys, why are you on a tech forum to begin with if you aren't the type of person to immediately customize your devices to personal tastes? Or do you still use internet explorer too?

He said he's "all for sites trying to monetize", but doesn't like the way they do it using ads. Adblocking or using apps that don't display the ads means AnandTech isn't getting revenue for those views.

I agree, especially with the annoying ads. If the AT forums has a premium model like it did at one point I wouldn't mind paying $10 a year or something like that (I doubt they are making that much money from me from ads, anyway) I choose it.

I'd keep adblocking off on the forums, but some of the ads that they've had have been annoying. A few unsafe ones in the past, as well. It would be better if they were simply selective and had ads for specific products, or purely text ads instead of banners. They have the referral system for Amazon and some other sites (using Dynamite Data) which automatically changes links to those sites, which has broken some links in the past.

As much as I like the forums and AnandTech, I keep AdBlock and NoScript up on my computers for AT for safety and to keep annoying ads at bay. If AnandTech even had a small product store I would contribute via that over enabling ads. I wish we could communicate this to Anand, but he's a busy guy, and I've never had luck with any emails to the main site staff. Maybe I'll try Twitter. But I doubt they'll change and they may have some practical reason for keeping the current system.

I rarely change settings from default. Then I don't have to redo anything when I reinstall. I just stopped using IE last year. Bfd.

Fwiw, I am using chrome on iOS and don't get the ads.

Also tapatalk sucks because it doesn't have the "new posts" function and that's the only way I browse the forums.

I don't like needing Adblock for my damn phone.

...which is why I use Opera. No ads here.

Random stupid question: why are people always saying that not showing ads deprives a site of revenue? Is the 'per click' revenue model dead?

Which leads to another question...if it had to change, assumably because no one clicked the ads...why do people still pay for banner advertising? Doesn't a lack of click-throughs prove it's ineffectiveness?

Apparently some people think that Anand Lal Shimpi should be required to spend hours of his valuable time every week providing them with premium content for free, with no ads and no compensation whatsoever.

I wonder if they would work at their jobs under similar circumstances.

The users are what draw others to the forums. If he wants to do this on the front page where he provides actual content, fine. But the reason people come to the forums is because of the large user community. Everyone here posts for free, so WE actually provide the content here. And the ads are fvcking annoying. I don't mind others ads, but this pop up crap has got to go.

Just make it LESS ANNOYING.

Fair enough. I just often see people here discussing ad-blocking strategies for the entire place, which gets on my nerves.

What's an internet explorer? Don't you use AOL? My internet is on the AOL. They send you the internet in the mail it comes in a CD with 50 hours of free internet.

Shut it down if it's a problem. I don't allow ads, period. There's too much shady behavior in the ad, and tracking industry. There's ways of making money, and respecting people's privacy, and security.

I've put a lot of time in this site, and I don't mean posting bullshit in OT. I have many hours into researching problems, and finding solutions in the technical forums. I expect no payment in return, though I have been rewarded through the generosity of other members. I do it because I enjoy it, and it can be done anywhere.

You guys are much more likely to get a response emailing (or tweeting) Anand. It's unlikely he will see this thread.

This isn't 2006 anymore. I shouldn't have to use mobile text-only versions of sites like I did when Windows Mobile was the dominant smartphone platform. I shouldn't have to load an app just to browse a website. I shouldn't have to install another browser to view one site.

The "whole point to having a smartphone" isn't the same for everyone. Don't presume that just because you do things a certain way that its the perfect way for everyone.

He said he's "all for sites trying to monetize", but doesn't like the way they do it using ads. Adblocking or using apps that don't display the ads means AnandTech isn't getting revenue for those views.

I have two issues, really. First, the way the ad is displayed is just annoying. If you scroll, it goes away and then it pops back up. If it could stay in place while scrolling (presumably, this is difficult to do, probably), I wouldn't mind it so much.

Secondly, AT runs ads on the forums already. People on desktop browsers aren't getting these extra ads. If the single banner ad placement is generating good enough revenue for people using browsers on desktops, I don't understand how it's not good enough for those of us on mobile devices. We're still loading the ads on page refreshes. We're still viewing them at the top of the page whenever we go through threads.

There should be no differentiation between a desktop browser viewing a web page and a mobile browser viewing the page. And this goes for a lot of sites, not just Anandtech. When I load a page and it presents me with a 'mobile optimized' version, my irritation factor increases just a little bit. Again, it's not pre-iPhone anymore. Before webkit for mobile devices, the browsers were horrid. Truly terrible in comparison. But the iPhone with Safari changed all of that with the promise of being able to view web sites on your mobile device exactly the same as you would view them on a desktop browser. That's what I want. That's the "whole point to having a smartphone" for me right now.

As far as Anand, I would probably put money on him not even knowing or realizing the forums have this ad. I wouldn't imagine he's involved in the day to day operation of the website at all.

... I shouldn't have to load an app just to browse a website. I shouldn't have to install another browser to view one site...

Tapatalk would seem to do exactly what you want though. You can be browsing the web on your standard browser and when you tap on a link for the forum or a forum post it will automatically open in tapatalk. You don't have to open the app and navigate to the post.

Why ohh why do people use smartphones for forums? I wouldn't even bother if I was sitting on the toilet and bored to death....no thanks
