Why am I out of RAM with 512MB?

I've got 2 20gig Maxtors in an IDE RAID 0 array. I've got it in 3 partitions, the largest being the middle one (d:), which weighs in around 20 gigs. If I try to run Scandisk or defrag the d: drive using the Win98 defrag tool, I get an error saying there isn't enough memory available. This is in normal windows or safemode. The dos mode one that comes up after a bad shutdown does run on the partition, but very slowly. Any help would be appreciated. For more system info, check the link in my sig or just ask. These forums have helped me out before so I'm hoping some hardware guru's can help me out again.

what video card do you have? win 98 can run out of memory addresses which would give you said error.

Your cluster size is too small. Format with a default cluster size of 32kb and those messages will go away. Better yet, install Windows 2000 and use NTFS! :)

Cheers!

That Q article refers to systems with MORE than 512MB of system memory. If you have 512MB or less, you're not affected. Having a too small a cluster size on a big partition WILL do this for sure!

Cheers!

Thanks guys, I think sharkeeper is right. Here's a screenshot of what Sandra has to say about the array. The link bacillus posted also points to the cluster size problem because I did use Partition Magic to setup all my partitions. Wow, only 45 min after starting the thread and I think I have my answer! :D Thanks guys!

Now, Grasshopper, you are beginning to understand the power of AnandTech!

Why not say thank you by going to the appropriate thread and wishing Anand a happy birthday!

He hasn't done badly for someone who just turned 19.
