Dell uses proprietary shit lol, I got a 5 year old PC sitting on my work bench right now somebody needs fixed. The case has a weird header plug that won't work on any non Dell MB. And guess what? Yup, his MB's dead. Your argument makes sense except using Dell is a pretty shitty example. The entire sodastream system isn't proprietary, just one part of it. Which is the same as a Dell computer. My Zune HD uses a proprietary connector, same with my iPod my electric toothbrush uses special brush heads, same with my electric shaver. I think proprietary is pretty common with a good amount of shit that's on the market.

Okay, reasonable point; but only because I used a bad example. In this particular case, the proprietary part is something that you have to continuously replace - and the replacement is something that otherwise is widely available commercially, with a standard fitting, identical in quality, and cheaper.

The wife and I just got one of these, and so far we like it. We drink a shit ton of seltzer. While I don't think it saves us much if any money, I do like the fact that we don't have to recycle 10 2 liter bottles every 2 weeks. I also likke the fact that we are not contributing the energy drain and other problems associated with the shipment or large quantites of water.

As for the CO2 refills, check your local BJ's. The one in Portsmouth stocks the large refills for ~15 bucks, which is still a ripoff but not too terrible.

I also read that someone has developed an adapter that will allow the use of any CO2 canister with the sodastream. EDIT: Here is the link

Soda is good. If you make it at home you can really save. A better method than the machines is to just spend the cash for a soda fountain. It cost about $400 to set up but the cost for a 2 liter filled is only about 23 cents. Uses the same canisters that you see in fast food places. You can also control the level of sugar used in the drink and tailor the flavors.

BTW coca-cola can rot in hell. They are one of the most evil corporations on the planet. Completely destroying countries water supplies.

These were really popular in the UK in the 70's.

They are OK if you can get decent syrup, my bet is you'll use it through a few CO2 refills then it will end up in the back of a cupboard somewhere.

I think I've got one lurking around somewhere.

Next to your breadmaker? :D

And the '80's as well.

The cheapest place to get Co2 is welding supplies. If you have a tank it cost about $15 for a 50lb refill. Enough to last about 2 years.

Aren't you the guy that spends $540 a year on bottled water? Why not invest in a RO filter to get that cost down first, then worry about saving money on soda later. The RO filter is a sure thing. This soda thingamajig -- not so much.

RO as in Reverse Osmosis?

Why the hell would you want an RO filter? Just buy a good activated carbon filter (Britta or whatever)...

The ratio for syrup is usually 6 to 1. Sams sells 1 gallon syrup that makes 6 gallons of soda for $11 , basically $1 a 2-liter.

soda is regularly onsale for < $2.50/12 pack

144oz, 33.8oz per liter

12pack = 4 liters / 2.50 = .60/liter and INFINITELY better than buying 2L bottles.

Also, 2L in 1 day WTF

Dude 2L in a day is nothing, I average 4-6L per day.

It's sort of shitty that the 3 places around me that sell the unit + the flavor bottles don't sell the c02 cartridges. Since it uses proprietary bottles and the stores sell the machine why the fuck don't they sell the bottles? Without some hax0ring if I bought this and ran out of C02 I'd be screwed until they shipped me another. They could have at least made it easily refillable. A few stores can do it, but none are anywhere around me.

Probably due to having highly compressed gas inside the bottle.

Possibly something to do with local safety regulations.
