I was in Bed Bath & Beyond looking for a Banana Hanger when I saw a small soda making machine. I drink an uber amount of Soda so I came home to look it up online. Seems to be pretty decent from the reviews I've come across.

http://www.sodastreamusa.com - a $99 device that can turn plain water into a delicious carbonated beverage is like magic :D

Anyone here own one?

because seltzer is disgusting?

it's not like the think is pumping out Coke.

edit: according to the amazon reviews, it also requires proprietary gas canisters that have to be purchased from the manufacturer once you burn through what the unit ships with.

I'd love to hear from someone that owns one too.

$100 is a bit much to risk on something like this.

There's no reason you couldn't buy Coke syrup and make Coke with it. It's C02 + water + syrup, you could use the same syrup that Burger King uses and it should taste the same as their drinks. It's just a smaller version of a fountain drink machine at any fast food place. The canister's can be refilled and last 60 or 110liters depend on which unit you get. I drink a ton of soda but 60 liters a month would be more than enough for me.

And for what it's worth for $50 a company on Ebay sells a unit which lets you hook up your own C02 canister so you don't have to buy the proprietary ones.

NS1 good looking out on the 20% mention, I get those in the mail once in awhile I'ma have to make sure to not throw the next one out.

Wow, I love how nobody has ever heard of this or how it works and suddenly is all pissy about it. How would you expect a device to carbonate water if not for gas canisters? Would you want to use a bicycle pump (I am not even sure if that'd work). Of course it uses canisters. What's the problem here?

Many years ago I had a similiar device. It was pretty decent, and seemed to be a lot cheaper.
Mine was more like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/iSi-Soda-Sipho...2370151&sr=8-4

Search around and read the reviews. You can probably find one that works well and is less expensive to buy and use. Many models can subsitute generic cartridges.

Typical reaction around here, believe me - I've learned about it the hard way other day...

My old roomate had a version of this...

It made pretty decent versions of drinks.

it's loud as fuck however...
and the cartridges don't last THAT long... but sufficiently... I do think there are ways to either refill them, or get knockoff replacement cartridges

It's sort of shitty that the 3 places around me that sell the unit + the flavor bottles don't sell the c02 cartridges. Since it uses proprietary bottles and the stores sell the machine why the fuck don't they sell the bottles? Without some hax0ring if I bought this and ran out of C02 I'd be screwed until they shipped me another. They could have at least made it easily refillable. A few stores can do it, but none are anywhere around me.

It obviously needs CO2. In the end, it's cheaper to just buy soda at the store.

I'm not a hater, but according to the amazon review, it ends up being like $0.42/L -- or about the same cost as a 2L bottle of soda on sale (possibly more if you're also buying flavoring syrups, and that's not taking into account the initial investment)

In Cali soda is rarely on sale for less than a buck, and we have tax + CRV. $1.25 for 2 liters would be a good sale price. closer to $2 is normal. This Sodasteam isn't a good deal for somebody who drinks 1 soda a day, but if you drink a liter or more a day it'll pay for itself after maybe 3 months.

soda is regularly onsale for < $2.50/12 pack

144oz, 33.8oz per liter

12pack = 4 liters / 2.50 = .60/liter and INFINITELY better than buying 2L bottles.

Also, 2L in 1 day WTF

yes and when you factor in tax + crv that 12 pack becomes over $3. And I wouldn't say regularly, I'm always on the look out for soda sales. 3/10 is the deals I'm seeing more often than not. With tax and shit it's 12 bucks. When it's 4/10 I stock up.

4/10 at Ralphs this week hummm limit 1 per coupon though :(

it's not that people are pissy about having to use CO2 cylinders--that *should* be assumed. It's jsut that it's a hidden, upkeep cost that is lightly mentioned, and if it truly is proprietary, limits you from using competitive, likely cheaper such cylinders.

besides, you can make your own soda without a fucking machine, and with no upkeep, and with very little cost. it's more fun to let science do the trick, anyway.

Can't you get an adapter to use standard tanks of the consumables? Would seem easy enough.
