Why am I getting sucky-ass DSL bandwidth and pings in the evenings?

I just got upgraded from 604/128 to 1.5/256 by Speakeasy. They also switched the routing over to my phone line (previously there was a separate line). Since the switch I have been getting terrible pings in the evenings (average of like 500) whereas in the mornings they are around 40-80. Any idea why this might be happening?

The POP might be a bit too much oversubscribed.

Try calling the SpeakEasy help desk and ask them to check the line. SpeakEasy used to be pretty responsive regarding bandwidth issues. When they found out how horribly oversubscribed the Chicago POP for Covad was, they built their own POP.

TO be clear: oversubscription is a normal thing, the level of oversubscription is the issue. SpeakEasy has (used to have?) a very good Reputation for a solid network.

FWIW

I checked again this AM at 6:30 ET - should be less congestion then. My latency was in fact better, but still there was tremendous variability from second to second. At any given test the ping to any particular server would range from 40 to 400 (last night it was 400 - 1000). On my old line pings would only really vary by 10-20ms at most from second to second. Does this influence anyone's thinking on the matter?

You might consider speaking to their technical support staff about this. My past experience with them has been that they know what they're doing and will work to fix the problem. YMMV, of course...

Yikes, I think I solved the problem. I noticed heavy traffic coming over the line of my second computer...which was not being used. Must be infected, backdoor, trojan or something. As soon as i disconnected it from the newtork the problem went away.
