WHS 2011 and GPU needs

Built a WHS 2011 system with a P45 board (no IGP), and used a radeon 4670 during the setup. Its still in the server now running on a standard MS vga driver.

My questions is, since there are no WHS (server 2008 r2) drivers for the consumer radeon cards does that mean the fan is going to be running 100% since the catalyst software doesn't have communication with the card?

Do i even need to have any gpu in this headless machine at all? Or does it need a gpu for rdp to work.

If i dont need it to run the system, i would just as soon take it out and get the power savings of not running it.

whs does not need a video card to run it, as it is designed to be headless. but as VirtualLarry mentioned if the board that you are using requires a video card to post you many need it, or go pick up a cheap passive card.

Another thing you can try is in the bios you can tell it to ignore all post errors and it should allow the board to boot, again this is for boards that require it.

Leave it with the VGA drivers there is No reason to change it.

Changing it to "real drivers" is useless and might contribute to unstable server.

On the contrary, there's a very good reason to install the proper drivers for a video card: idling. It won't properly idle if it's in VESA mode.

WHS can switch off the display but unlike workstation it is Not relay Idling, so it does not matter for a server.

I guess that depends on the hardware. If the board has no GPU I didn't think it would boot. If that's not the case please me know too. Thanks, -JC

He can probably find a decent card in FS/FT for $10.

Doing this on my Asus MB...if I ever need to use KMV local I will just pop the card in and boot up. Keeps power low and temps down without.
